4 The world outside (late 2013) What Government had done to its organisations MOD - Research Agencies NHS – Trusts Transport – DVLA Services - Outsourced Education was changing Academies were being formed In November 2013 the 3 Heads & their Chairs went to a briefing day at the Diocese of Salisbury Board of Education at Wilton The message was clear – form an Academy or even a group of academies (Umbrella organisation) Very serious for smaller schools in rural areas like Wiltshire Message was clear – we could not/should not carry on as we were 413/04/2015

5 Planning for the best It was clear that if you didn’t join an Academy group you might be put into one – better to do it than have it done to you! All main political parties had said they would continue with the Academy Programme We arranged two other briefings that confirmed this and asked our FGBs for permission to explore further We had a particular structure in mind – did not want super-heads or external partners or ego trips We wanted to be together under an Umbrella Trust. At the time there were several options but we chose: Multi Academy Trust (MAT) 513/04/2015

6 What is a Multi Academy Trust Our Trust is called Somerset Road Education Trust We are a company registered at Company House – 09343767 We are a Charity The Company and Charity status define our legal framework. We have Directors and Trustees We have Articles of Association that tell the company how it can operate 613/04/2015

7 Drivers to convert We wanted to move at a sensible thorough pace but: LA imploding The incentives to convert and form Trusts (£25K per school and £100K per Trust respectively) were not guaranteed. Be master of own destiny Co-located; protect individuality The rules were changing all the time There was an election due in 2015! Conversion date 1 January 2015 Not reasons to convert Ofsted Profit Empire building Recreating a new LA 13/04/20157
