„Hands on Particle Physics“ EPOG Masterclasses for WYP05 http://wyp.teilchenphysik.org Michael Kobel Bonn University Germany EPOG outreach meeting, CERN, 30.10.2004

General Outline Particle Physics Masterclass (MC), idea from UK Students (16-18 year olds) spend 1 day at university / institute listen to lectures (introduction to particle physics) work like real scientists European Organisation for WYP 2005 One or more MCs in each country (30 to >100 students each) About 60 institutes from 18 countries interested more than 2000 (3000?) students expected Whole activity w/in 2 weeks: March 7 to March 18, 2005 about 6 masterclasses join in video conference at the end of the day Discuss results and differences Combine results (better accuracy)

Typical Agenda: morning LECTURE HALL 9:30 Welcome: The World Year of Physics 2005, and the WYP Masterclasses 10:00 1st Lecture: Preparation for the afternoon PC Exercise 1 (MANDATORY) Particle Physics, Accelerators, Detectors, Standard Model: Building Blocks and Forces. Discussion 11:00 Second Lecture: (free choice, typically related to the institutes activities) e.g. more details on institute research, particle physics and cosmology, spin-off effects of particle physics etc. Discussion 12:00 Local Information: (optional) e.g. facts about the lab, or information about studying physics CANTINE 12:30 – 14:00 Lunch including informal discussions with lecturers and student tutors (important for personal contact!)

Typical Agenda: afternoon (modified: w/o Exercise 2) PC Pool (and Lab) 14:00 – 16:00 PC Exercise 1: Measuring Z branching ratios (MANDATORY) 14:00 Introduction 14:30 Students working in pairs themselves at the PC with LEP data 15:30 Collection of results, discussion and interpretation Pause with refreshments and maybe: - Ask a scientist: Open Q&A forum about particle physics and cosmology - short Guided Tour through the Lab Video Room 16:30 Daily European Video Conference (MANDATORY) Sharing Experiences (typically 6 classes) Combining Results on Z branching ratios Discussion, questions to scientists? 18:30 END, souvenir distribution: e.g. Masterclass CDs, Particle Adventure CD(?), CERN comic, local souvenirs

The organisational team Michael Kobel, Bonn University, EPOG Overall coordination on behalf of EPOG Stefanie Zweifel, Executive Coordinator ( Executive Secretary, Science-on-Stage Germany, Berlin) European logistics (emailing, press, contact to SonS international) special German program in WYP particles physics quiz on „teilchenphysik.org“ prizes: 15 participations at WYP-Masterclasses at DESY Hamburg+Zeuthen and CERN (travel+accomodation funded by German Outreach Budget) Christian Helzel, Technical Coordinator ( Physics Teacher, Bonn, (5h / week)) Web Pages Creation of a WYP Masterclass CD Organisation of material translation for CD Technical coordination of video conferencing (plus help from CERN!?)

Financing No cost: University/ research centre infrastructure (video conf, PCs, lecture halls) Scientists for talks Paper copies for work sheets local students travel (public transport) local cost: (not covered by EPS) „salary“ for student tutors (if needed) lunch / refreshments for participants (local sponsors?)  ACTION FOR YOU? central cost: executive coordinator (from German SonS-D sponsor) technical coordinator (5h / week): 4000€ from German Outreach 2500 masterclass CDs (to take home): 4000€ from EPS-HEPP 2500 CERN comics (to be decided by CERN) 2500 „particle adventure“ CDs (?) (EPS funding, if available)

Exercise translations (current status) 3 central mandatory Z branching ratio exercises: (one has to be picked by each institute): „Identifying Particles“ (T.Wyatt, Manchester) mandatory: Z BR‘s from OPAL (UK,D,I) optional: WW pairs, 4f events (UK,D) „Hands on CERN“ (E.Johannsson et al, Stockholm) mandatory: Z BR‘s from DELPHI (UK,SE,I,F,DK,HU,E(x2),NO) optional: WW pairs, alpha_s (UK,SE,I,F,DK,HU,E) „Keyhole to the birth of Time“ (J.Gillies et al, CERN) mandatory: Z BR‘s from DELPHI (UK,PL,E,I) optional: alpha_s (UK,PL) Still to come: GR,CZ,SL,P  15 Languages!!! Some other optional teaching systems (some better for home) BABAR (English) relativistic kinematics, Eigentime, K0‘s Lancaster (English) laws of collisions, momentum measurement Bonn (German) bubble chamber pictures Erlangen (German) quiz and animations Get them from http://wyp.teilchenphysik.org  downloadshttp://wyp.teilchenphysik.org

Things to discuss today CD production event schedule vs. institutes video conference outline video conference tool video conference technical test schedule further needs from Your side summary of actions for You code in the following red: to be discussed / decided NOW blue: actions for (some of) You green: actions for the organizers (MK, CH, SZ)

CD production Masterclass CD ~ copy of website to be distributed to each student (and maybe also outside Masterclasses) draft label existing Deadline for all material: 30.11.04 to Christian Helzel rest of translations (GR,CZ,SL,PO, +?) 1 info page per institute (template) (english + local language)(template) general outreach link list for each country on country page (-) or on links page (+) ?country page links page Suggest restructuring of „Exercise“ part„Exercise“ part Rename „Exercise“  „Physics“ Order according to languages Add some short descriptions Suggestions for further on-CD material (incl copyright) by 15.11. (to be selected by M.K. and C.H.)

Event schedule versus institutes Poll for preferred dates: 37 Institutes answered (up to 3 preferences) very flatly distributed among 11 days (great!) min: Mo,7 th (5) max: We,9 th (14), else (7)-(12) some institutes plan for > 1 day (why not?) 23 institutes did *not* answer (1 wrongly) Final deadline for sending preferred dates: 20.11 after that, institutes will just be assigned a date by us! aim: establish final list of dates by 30.11 Opening event: 1st Video Conf Mo, 7 th from Berlin (Humboldt University and DESY Zeuthen) within big German WYP week „Physics since Einstein“ www.dpg-einstein.de www.dpg-einstein.de ABECERNCZDKSFGRINLNOPSLEUK 11111233212221

video conference schedule 1 hour, from 16:30 to 17:30 CET 1 (or 2) moderators for *all* conferences (EPOG) suggested scenario (like in an international collaboration) say hello (1 speaker for each class) discuss general performance, any basic problems? present and discuss *few* interesting/problematic events collect the measurement results („L‘Italie douze points“) compare and check if they are compatible discuss why (or why not) (statistical errors) if incompatible, add systematic errors discuss importance of independent measurements combine results compare combined result (2,000 evts DELPHI+OPAL) with LEP (20,000,000 evts DELPHI+OPAL+ALEPH+L3) maybe: let a LEP scientist tell some nice stories (sun+moon tides, TGV effect, Geneva lake level, etc.) good-bye

video conference tool OUR SUGGESSTION: VRVS (www.vrvs.org)www.vrvs.org browser based, in windows (and LINUX, did not try) Easy to use, Ch. Helzel will distribute technical requirements first successful test last week (Hamburg, Dortmund, Bonn)

Allows one partipant to share desktop needed for data average (Xsel sheet)

discussion points image: standard webcam with 360x240 pixels fine sound: microphones, speakers, echo, feedback etc. Alternative suggestion: Microsoft Netmeeting via DFN (German research Net) video bridge https://www.vc.dfn.de/ https://www.vc.dfn.de/ possible advantages: mix with other hardware allowed  possible to include established video conference systems VRVS advantages: established HEP tool uniform system for all participants might even get „our own“ virtual room support from CERN very probable Any objections? if not, Christian Helzel will circulate manual and requirements (worked for complete VRVS newcomers: HH, DO, me(!))

Video Conf test schedule Each conference (5~7 participants) has to be tested with *all* participants in January 05 (>= 11 tests) Propose: 2nd (better!) or 3rd week in January 05 Precise test schedule will be fixed in December 05 Hope: Tests coordinated from CERN (Mick et al)

Further needs at/from Your/Our side Fix number of participants, exchance experiences Bonn: Experience with.le. 30 Students UK: Experience with.ge. 100 Students BE? PL? Get enough student tutors for PC exercise ideal: 1tutor/10 students, min: 1tutor/20 students Decide how to collect/invite students UK: complete classes BN: single students Fix the free-choice part of agenda select speakers and topics need for some example introductory talks? possibly organize guided tours, etc.

Summary of actions for You TRANSLATORS: Send missing translations (or extend existing ones) (by 30.11.) COUNTRY RESPONSIBLES send country link list (by 30.11.) suggest further web-based education systems You want to have *on* CD (copyright assured!)? (by 26.11.) INSTITUTE RESPONSIBLES send 1 institute page (english + local language) (by 30.11.) send preferred event dates (by 20.11.) organize video conf test dates (in December) give good estimate/ fix number of participants (December) start announcing event (December) and collect students get student tutors, speakers, guides, etc ask CERN for video conf support (tests and moderator) >= 2500 comics „world of particles“
