What Happened? http://i.nuseek.com/images/template/360x318/hk_20080207_chernobyl.jp g Inadequate personnel Reactor malfunction Release of radioactive material

Aftermath of the disaster… Radioactive fallout in Europe Caused cancer in survivors Recent radioactive release NSC built over shelter http://www.ourtimelines.com/hist/chernobyl.jpg

Are we okay?! 4,500 miles away Radiation contained within Europe http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/@api/deki/files/4918/=chernobyl.jpg

Chernobyl Reporting… Reported by Swedish monitoring stations http://www.worthynews.com/wp-content/uploads/006-048.jpg

Russian Response… Evacuated people from homes Contained nuclear waste Unsuccessful http://thebreakthrough.org/blog/2008/05/02/russia%20map.gif

Terminology 1)Nuclear power uses nuclear fission to heat water into pressurized steam, which turns a turbine generator creating electricity. 2) Nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction that occurs when a nucleus splits into smaller nuclei, and releases gamma radiation. 3) Radiation sickness occurs when someone is exposed to radiation; it causes damage to blood cells, and symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, weakness, fatigue, hair loss, and is often fatal. 4) Scram is "an emergency shutdown of a nuclear reactor", its an acronym for "safety control rod axe men". 5) A steam turbine creates power when steam, (vaporized water) hits blades on a wheel, causing it to rotate rapidly, creating power. 6) Core meltdown is when the reactor core cooling fails, and the emergency core cooling fails, the core heats up until it’s a "molten mass". 7) "Plutonium is a radioactive chemical element". It is primarily created in nuclear reactor, and is shiny and tarnishes easily. 8)A nuclear reactor is a device in which nuclear chain reactions are initiated, controlled, and sustained at a steady rate. 9)Decontamination is the process of removing contamination, particularly the cleaning off of dangerous materials. 10)Radioactive exposure, also called radiological contamination, is the uncontrolled distribution of radioactive material in a given environment. 11)Cesium 137 is a radioactive isotope of cesium, which is formed mainly as a fission product by nuclear fission. It has a half-life of 30.07 years, and decays by beta decay. 12)Strontium 90 is a radioactive isotope of strontium, with a half-life of 28.8 years. 13)A containment vessel consists of a barrier that successively includes fuel cladding, primary vessels, and thick shielding. As a final barrier, the reactor is housed in a containment structure. 14)There are several types of graphite moderated nuclear reactors that have been used in commercial electricity generation.
