1 Catalyst 5/23/14  Write down and answer the following question on your Catalyst sheet:  How is LSD typically taken?  What could possibly be dangerous about LSD? SONG: KID CUDI – MARIJUANA

2 Finals (Writing Component)  NEXT WEEK THURSDAY/FRIDAY (MAY 29/30)  4-5 short answer questions on this drug unit  Make sure you study your notes and understand the effects of drugs on the brain and on society

3 Travel Posters  Since LSD & psilocybin allow users to go on “trips”…  We’re going to make our own travel ads!  It’s up to you whether or not you want to make it an advertisement for a good trip or a warning poster for a bad trip  Must include the following:  Reference to either LSD or psilocybin  A catchy slogan (e.g. “Fly high with LSD!”)  Drawings of what you think you’d experience on a good or bad trip  Lots of colors  Mention of effects of LSD or psilocybin we learned  You have ~30 minutes today in class to work on these posters. Be creative!

7 Marijuana  “Mixed” effects  Properties of stimulants, depressants & hallucinogens  Marijuana is technically addictive, although less so than most drugs  The active chemical in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)  Comes from the Cannabis plant  Plant also used as “hemp,” a material used for many goods  Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the world

9 History of Marijuana  Native to Central & South Asia, used for medicinal properties  Ancient history of religious/ritual use  12 th century - Muslims made it into hashish (hash)  1937 – Marihuana Tax Act  Prohibited production of cannabis in the US  Hemp was a cheap alternative to paper pulp  Hearst and other influential businessmen felt hemp threatened their supply of wood used for newspapers  1970 – synthetic form of THC approved for medicinal use  2012 – marijuana legalized in Washington and Colorado

11 Marijuana & the Brain  To help regulate dopamine levels, your brain naturally creates neurotransmitters to block dopamine release  Your brain naturally produces chemicals called cannabinoids that work to block these neurotransmitter blockers so dopamine levels increase  Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) works as a stronger version of your natural cannabinoids, increasing dopamine release

12 Pros & Cons of Marijuana  In the margins of your notes (or on a separate sheet of paper), take 1 minute to write down what you think are the pros and cons of marijuana use

13 Stand Up If…  You listed more pros than cons  One of your pros involves “medical uses”  One of your cons involves “makes you dumber” or “makes you lazy”  You think marijuana is not deadly (hasn’t killed anyone)  You think marijuana should be legalized

14 Medical Marijuana  Marijuana has several medicinal uses:  Anxiety  Nausea & vomiting  Migraines  Muscle spasms  Glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
