1 Chapter 6, Section 4 Describe the process of metamorphism.
Standards 3c. Students know how to explain the properties of rocks based on the physical and chemical conditions in which they are formed, including plate tectonic properties. Objective 1 Describe the process of metamorphism. Objective 2 Explain the difference between regional and contact metamorphism. Objective 3 Distinguish between foliated and nonfoliated metamorphic rocks, and give an example of each. Assessment End of Section Questions, Daily Quiz, Chapter Test Review Daily Bellwork, Science Starters, Standards Practice Movie on the Rock Cycle??

2 Key Terms Create a flash card for the following key terms (p. 141 in textbook): Metamorphism Contact metamorphism Regional metamorphism Foliation Nongoliated If you finish early, study your flash cards!

3 Metamorphism Metamorphism is the process in which 1 type of rock changes into a metamorphic rock due to extreme heat or pressure. There are 2 types of metamorphism that occur in the Earth’s crust: Contact Metamorphism Regional Metamorphism

4 Metamorphism Contact Magma comes into direct contact with rock
Only a small section of rock affected Regional Metamorphism over very large areas. Occurs during platonic activity due to changes in temperature and pressure

5 Metamorphic Rock Video Clip

6 Texture of Metamorphic Rock
Minerals arranged in planes or bands = FOLIATION Caused by extreme pressure A physical property; minerals are not changed chemically, just a change in shape Rocks that do not have bands or aligned minerals = NONFOLIATED The original rock had little or no minerals or the original rock grains are round or square and therefore do not change position (no long sides) when pressure is coming from one direction. Which type of rock is it? Foliated. Nonfoliated.

7 Quick Check!! What is metamorphic rock? ________________________________________________________________________________________ The types of metamorphism are Contact and _________. What are the 2 types of metamorphic rocks? ________________________________________________________________________________________ What is the main difference between the 2 types of metamorphic rocks? ________________________________________________________________________________________

8 INTERACTIVE Choose 2 question from 1-4 on page Then answer #5, 6, and 7. Parthenon made of marble After this lesson, do some type of graphic organizer of all 3 types of rock.

9 Daily Quiz Put into Responders and/or project using SMART notebook. 3 Questions a day. Oral and on small papers??
