1 World Languages Institute Graduate School of Education Department of Asian Languages and Cultures Chinese Language Initiatives in Response to the Critical Needs of the Global Marketplace

2 The World Languages Institute The WLI provides K-12 world language teachers with a graduate-level core program in pedagogy reflecting the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the National Standards for Second Language Teaching. In 2006, the WLI initiated a program specially tailored to training native speakers of Chinese currently working in other fields to become effective teachers of the language to meet the needs of the New Jersey educational system.

3 The World Languages Institute Accelerated Chinese Language Teacher Certification Program

4 The WLI Accelerated Chinese Language Teacher Certification Program offers: State-approved courses in pedagogy, methodology, Chinese linguistics and literature. Intensive day and evening courses taught by highly qualified faculty and experts in the field. Fulfillment of K-12 Certificate of Eligibility requirements in as few as two summers.

5 Course Offerings Summer 2008 Methods of Foreign Language Teaching Technology in the World Language Class Theories of Second Language Acquisition Advanced Topics in Chinese Language and Linguistics Chinese Across the Curriculum Practicum in Language Education Chinese Poetry Advanced Chinese Grammar

6 WLI Chinese Program Statistics Accepted Applicants in 2008 - 36 Total # in Program 2006 - 2008 - 102 Participants Who Earned CE 2006 - 2008 - 27 Participants Working in NJ Public Schools - 9

7 Practicum in Language Education This GSE course was conducted for two weeks at the Highland Park Summer Camp followed by two weeks at Princeton H. S. with students from Princeton and West Windsor-Plainsboro K-12 school districts. It was funded by grants from the Freeman Foundation and STARTALK.

8 Graduate School of Education Opportunities for Chinese Language Teacher Training Traditional two-year Master’s Degree (Ed.M.) and Certification Programs (45 credits) Alternate Route Program (19 credits)* *Upon successful completion of the alternate route program, participants are recommended for standard certification and, if accepted into the GSE Ed.M. Language Education program, may apply their 19 credits towards an Ed.M. degree.

9 The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures Master of Arts for Teachers “This program is designed for those already teaching Chinese and those interested in pursuing a career related to Chinese language and culture teaching. Undergraduates majoring in Chinese or related fields intending to teach Chinese may wish to augment their B.A. with this degree.” Excerpted from the departmental website
