Do Now 3/12/14 1.What is plate tectonics? 2.Who discovered the 4 moons of Jupiter? 3.How do you write the coordinates of an object or place?

Do Now 10/9/13 Read the article and answer the questions in your warm up section of your notebook

The Nature of Volcanic Eruptions  Factors that determine the violence of an eruption Composition, temperature, and dissolved gasses of the magma

The Nature of Volcanic Eruptions  Lava Flows Basaltic lavas are more fluid. Pahoehoe (Ropy) Lava Flow

 The three main volcanic types are shield volcanoes, cinder cones, and composite cones. A volcano is a mountain formed of lava and/or pyroclastic material.. A conduit, or pipe, carries gas-rich magma to the surface A crater is the depression at the summit of a volcano or that which is produced by a meteorite impact.

Anatomy of a “Typical” Volcano

Shield Volcanoes

Cinder Cones

Composite Cones

Mount St. Helens Before and After the May 18, 1980, Eruption

 Geologists conclude that magma originates when essentially solid rock, located in the crust and upper mantle, partially melts.  The most obvious way to generate magma from solid rock is to raise the temperature above the level at which the rock begins to melt.

Basaltic Magma at the Surface

 The basic connection between plate tectonics and volcanism is that plate motions provide the mechanisms by which mantle rocks melt to generate magma. Rising magma can form continental volcanic arcs (Andes Mountains). Rising magma can form volcanic island arcs in an ocean (Aleutian Islands).

Convergent Boundary Volcano

 The greatest volume of volcanic rock is produced along the oceanic ridge system. Less pressure on underlying rocks Lithosphere pulls apart. Large quantities of fluid basaltic magma are produced. Partial melting occurs

After each video write a paragraph about the impact of the disaster Pompeii: The Last day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQzDcZE2hoE&feature=related Japan Tsunami 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeLlySDmjuw&feature =relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeLlySDmjuw&feature =related

Quiz NC Geologic History 1.What type of rocks are found in the blue ridge belt? 2.What is the name of the fault zone at the Inner Piedmont Belt 3.What rock type makes up the Charlotte belt? 4.What rock type make up the Carolina Slate belt? 5.How old are the rocks in the Eastern Slate Belt? 6.What % of NC does the Coastal Plain belt cover?
