Photogrammetric and LIDAR surveys on the Sciara del Fuoco to monitor the 2007 Stromboli eruption Bernardo E. 1, Coltelli M. 2, Marsella M. 1, Proietti C. 2, Sonnessa A. 1 1 Sapienza Università Roma 2 Istituto Nazionale Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Sezione di Catania

Aerial surveys carried out between 2001 and 2007: high resolution Digital Elevation Model (horiz./vert. resolutions 15-20 cm/20-50 cm) Photogrammetric and LIDAR surveys made available pre, post and syn-eruption DEMs for monitoring both the 2002-03 and 2007 eruptions funded by the Italian Civil Protection: GNV and INGV-DPC research programs

Photogrammetric and LIDAR surveys of the 2007 eruption 2006: Pre-eruption LIDAR 4 March 2007: syn-eruption photogrammetric 15-16 March 2007: syn-eruption photogrammetric 12 April 2007: Eruption end photogrammetric 22 May 2007 Post-eruption LIDAR

The available DEMs, as well as the corresponding orthophotos allowed to: reconstruct and model slope deformations and the main morphological features connected to volcanic activity during the last two effusive eruptions (2002-03 and 2007) evaluate the temporal evolution of the lava flow field

2001 aerial phothogrammetry 2: slope deformations, connected to volcanic activity – building of the lava terrace (2002-2003) and its vertical displacement (2007) Aerial photogrammetry post 2007 2007 residual

2: slope deformations, connected to 2002-2003 volcanic activity – landslide and building of the lava terrace Aerial photogrammetry post 2002-2003

Aerial photogrammetry post 2007 2: slope deformations, connected to 2007 volcanic activity – vertical displacement of the lava terrace and slope bulging

2: slope deformations, connected to volcanic activity

3: Example of the reconstruction of the 2002-2003 lava flow fields (27/01/2003)

3: Reconstruction of the 2007 lava flow fields Orthorectificaton of helicopter photos to integrate aerial surveys, by the scientific software, OrthoView - DITS, Università La Sapienza) F1, F1a, F1b: active on 27 February only F2 active 27 February – 02 April F3 active 09-10 March Lava flow limits defined by the analysis of aerial orthophotos

 flow volumes and daily effusion rate evaluated from the comparisons among syn, post and pre-eruption DEMs from photogrammetric and LIDAR surveys for the last two effusive eruptions of Stromboli  comparison between effusion rates from aerial and satellite data  Aerial surveys, even if less frequent than satellite observations, are very useful for constraining effusion rate trends because they can be adopted for lava volume estimating from the quantitative comparison of multi-temporal DEMs  Quantitative data contributed to improve the knowledge of volcanic processes, in particular to evaluate the connection between lava effusion and slope instabilities at Stromboli volcano Conclusions

Thank you for your attention!!!
