2 Open Science Conference Assembly of entire WCRP research community Will also engage other key international programs Exclusive opportunity for exchange and collaboration across diverse research communities (e.g., WCRP, WWRP, IGBP, IHDP, …) working to advance understanding and prediction of climate variability and change across scales ~1500 participants anticipated The Open Science Conference will: Appraise current state of climate science (  AR5) Identify most urgent scientific issues and research challenges Ascertain how WCRP can best facilitate research and develop partnerships critical for progress Facilitate growth of future, diverse workforce

5 Conference Finances Conference budget under development. Conference costs very likely to exceed $500K US research agencies approached with request for ~$300K. Reactions positive so far. No firm commitments yet. Denver area laboratories, universities, NCAR, and corporations have expressed support for the Denver site of the OSC – another potential source of financial support (e.g. sponsor a reception, etc). Potential international sponsors approached about sponsorship. UCAR-JOSS has been enlisted to support the Conference. Open Science Conference

8 Venue: Downtown Denver Sheraton Hotel Centrally located on pedestrian mall 1,231 lodging rooms Over 48,000 sq ft of ballroom & exhibit space, all on one floor –Plenary space for 1200+ –4 parallel sessions of up to 350 –300-350 posters (rotated daily), food, & 10 exhibit booths Contract for space and lodging under negotiation Open Science Conference

15 Supporting the Conference OSC is less than 2 years away…relatively short time to prepare Need strong support and input from JSC and WCRP projects, e.g.: –Encourage participation and financial support –Stimulate, suggest, and lead exciting symposia and additional program features –Contribute to the OSC organization Open Science Conference
