2 ATTACK ON MONCADA BARRACKS Began Cuban Revolution The unsuccessful invasion of rebels Rebels consisted of lower class people Led by Fidel and Raul 120 v. 400 Unprepared rebels = mistakes losing artillery car, men left behind from lack of weapons, and men leaving car before the were in the barracks About 60 rebels killed and 40 captured

5 BATTLE OF LAS MERCEDES Last battle of Operation Verano Plan was to lure Castro’s army out of Mountains Surrender and destroy Fidel’s ambush on retreating Cubans stopped by undetected armies The war ended with a cease-fire propaganda Gave Fidel a chance to retreat

6 BATTLE OF YAGUAJAY Castro’s response attacks to Operation Verano The army started as sixty, grew to 250 as they advanced to the city Cuban army = 450-500 men Camilo Cienfuegos was put in charge of the rebels Invasions were continually unsuccessful

7 BATTLE OF SANTA CLARA Rebels stopped trying to invade Yaguajay, moved on to Santa Clara the next day Combined forces of Cienfuegos, Guevara, and local revolutionaries moved to Santa Clara The city was taken within 12 hours after invasion 3900 v. 340 out numbered 2900 taken prisoner
