Dichotomous Key and Phylogenetic Tree “I would tell a science joke… but all the good ones argon”

Identifying an organism – Dichotomous Key A dichotomous key is a step by step process which gives you two options per question. Each different answer leads you to a different path to find your answer. The key is constructed so that a series of choices must be made, and each choice leads to a new branch of the key. If choices are made accurately, the end result is the correct name of the organism being identified.

In Class Dichotomous Key Worksheet Complete the Fish and Plants Dichotomous Key Independently

Phylogeny and Phylogenetic Tree’s Many organisms have evolved over time Phylogeny is the study of the history of evolution Phylogenetic trees show how closely related different organisms are We will examine this more in Evolution

Make your own dichotomous key: Your task is to draw 10 different but similar organisms and create a dichotomous key to help someone else identify each of those different organisms. The organisms need not be real (E.g. Minions) nor do they need to be complex to draw (E.g. Stick Figures). Each organism must have a name. Create a rough copy of your dichotomous key and then create a final copy Once completed exchange your dichotomous key with another person and identify the names of each of their species

Homework Answer #1-15 (p.45); 17-22, 25 (p.46); #30, 33 (p.47); #1-13 (p.48)
