1 Thursday December 4, 2008 Agenda Warm up in notebook Sickness Review for Mr. Hampton Housing update “A Day of Reading” 1 st hour: Chapters 15, 16, 18, 19 3 rd hour: Chapters 12, 13, 16, 18, 19 HOMEWORK STRIKE SYSTEM IN EFFECT: COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK AND JGHG BOOK OUT BEFORE BELL Objective(s): Apply previous FCA skills by answering questions at the end of each chapter. Materials Needed: Comp. Notebook Pen/pencil JGHG book

2 Warm Up 12/4/2008 Explain to me what YOU did for the past two days while there was a substitute in my class (what did you do on Tues and Wednes)? Did you miss me? Why or why not? Why didn’t you write me a “Get well” card? Were you worried about me at all? Explain why or why not. DO NOT STOP WRITING UNTIL THE 5-MINUTE TIMER HAS GONE OFF! 5 PEOPLE NEEDED FOR “DISCUSSION”

3 Allusion Allusion: when a book or story is mentioned or used in the book you’re reading.

4 Lazarus Lazarus: In Jesus’ time, a man who was dead but then resurrected by Jesus.

5 Review (1/2/4/6 PERIOD) Chapter 12: – Joe reflects on the different nurses that visit him. Then he remembers a conflict with the Germans—namely a man named Lazarus, who “raises” from the dead a few times.

6 Review (3 PERIOD) Chapter 9: – Despite Joe’s attempts to not dream anymore, he flashback’s to a his last camping trip with his father. Joe’s father loves his fishing rod. Joe loses his father’s rod (symbolism?)

7 Preview (1/2/4/6 PERIOD) Chapter 15: – Joe begins tapping with his head but see’s no success. The other doctor’s think he is going crazy and sedate him.

8 Preview (1/2/4/6 PERIOD) Chapter 16: – Joe has psychoactive dream of drinking with dead people and Jesus Christ. At the end, he throws himself at the feet of Christ. ALLUSION?

9 Preview (1/2/4/6 PERIOD) Chapter 18: – The new day nurse realizes that Joe is attempting to communicate. At the end, they ask him a very important question.

10 Preview (1/2/4/6 PERIOD) Chapter 19: – Joe is insulted by the question they ask and ponders how to respond to it. Joe has dream of being the “armless, legless wonder of the 20 th century.”
