Nuts & Bolts New Covenant Truth Expanded Welcome to the Family! 1. Understanding Operative or Recurring words. 2. Understanding Spirit Baptism 3. Understanding Spirit Adoption

+ Welcome to the Family! You were children with no more rights than the slave children. Now, you have been appointed sons with all of the rights and privileges of sonship! Key passages for understanding this wonderful truth: Galatians 3:23-4:18 and Romans 6 Welcome to the Family!

+ First, let’s gain a broad overview by watching the operative (recurring) words…. Operative Words in Galatians Faith & Promise – Scan chapters 3 and 4 TODAY’S EMPHASIS Spirit – Read 3:2, 5:14,4:6,29; 5:5, 16,17,18,22,25; 6:8,18 Our most salient point: The New Covenant is administered by Christ through the agency of the Holy Spirit. It is important that we understand just how He does this. 1. Understanding Operative or Recurring words.

+ The New Covenant is effected (both in position and practice) through Spirit Baptism SPIRIT BAPTISM Provides equal access to the promise of the Abrahamic Covenant – Galatians 3:22-26 (Romans 6) This baptism assures (1) My identity in Christ (2) My position in Christ (3) My reciprocal union with Christ. (4) My equal access to the promises! Factoid: Where we once saw the church portrayed as family and part of the body of Christ, we now see the church as “community” in contemporary evangelism. 2. Understanding Spirit Baptism ? What do I see?

We are all bound to our first principles or what the Bible calls “elements” or “rudiments.” (Gal 4:3,9; Col. 2:8,20)  Rudiments are like a keyboard on an instrument.  A keyboard limits and enables my performance at the same time.  A keyboard gives me liberty to perform within its laws.  First principles are also premises, that is they are assumed by faith. Whether good or bad, first principles are normally passed down through our families. Factoid: Both the Jews and the Greeks around them were conversant in concept of first principles, (elements, or rudiments - from the Greek stoicheion.) Factoid: The Jewish people also fully understood Roman adoption or son-placing.

+ Adoption is the direct result of Spirit Baptism. SPIRIT ADOPTION Galatians 4:1-14 (1) Frees us from bondage to the elements of the world, (stoicheion). 4:1-4 (2) Redeems us unto the adoption of sons. 4:5 (3) Frees the Holy Spirit to administer the Father-son relationship in us. 4:6 (4) Gives us immediate access to the inheritance. 4:7 (5) Demonstrates the insanity of returning to the bondage of the worldly elements (stoicheion). Note: Col. 2:8,20. Stoicheion: Fundamental premises (such as A,B,C’s). Philosophical stoicheion are generally based on Gnosticism, Platonism, and Aristotle. Political stoicheion descend from Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome (Daniel 2). Religious stoicheion all descend from the ultimate works-based premise: Man can contribute to his own salvation (or elevation.) 3. Understanding Spirit Adoption

+ Reinforcing: Recurring words give meaning to context. Exercise Hebrews 1:1 – 3:13. Please list some of the highlighted words or phrases: 1. _________________________________ 2. _________________________________ 3. _________________________________ 4. _________________________________ 5. _________________________________ 6. _________________________________ 7. ___________________________________ Salient Point: The New Covenant introduces a whole new level of family truth which relates to our family oneness in the body of Christ. What information can we gather by simply looking at the broad landscape of the passage? Another exercise in Operative or Recurring words. Fathers, Father Son, my, son, a son, many sons, inheritance heirs Brethren, my brethren, holy brethren. children house
