Accentuate the Negative

Show me the money Kamauri decided to start a coffee shop. He spent: $20 on coffee. $15 on cups $10 on sugar and cream On the first day he was open, he made $75. On the second day he made $50. Did Kamauri’s stand make money? How much money did it make?

Temperature Problem Using a thermometer, Find the temperature in Farenheit that it would be on a hot summer day. Find the temperature that it would be on the coldest day of the year. What is the difference between these two temperatures?

Getting Colder One day it was 60 degrees Farenheit outside. Mark this temperature on the thermometer.

Getting Colder One day it was 60 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Mark this temperature on the thermometer. If the temperature decreased 15 degrees, what temperature would it be?

Getting Colder One day it was 60 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Mark this temperature on the thermometer. If the temperature decreased 15 degrees, what temperature would it be? If the temperature decreased 40 more degrees, what would the new temperature be?

Getting Colder One day it was 60 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Mark this temperature on the thermometer. If the temperature decreased 15 degrees, what temperature would it be? If the temperature decreased 40 more degrees, what would the new temperature be? If the temperature decreased 20 more degrees, what would the temperature be?

Getting Colder One day it was 60 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Mark this temperature on the thermometer. If the temperature decreased 15 degrees, what temperature would it be? If the temperature decreased 40 more degrees, what would the new temperature be? If the temperature decreased 20 more degrees, what would the temperature be? What is the difference between the highest and the lowest temperature that day in degrees Fahrenheit?

Sauna to Ice Bath In the arctic, Nordic people have a tradition. They sit in saunas (hot houses) where the temperature can be as hot as 40 C (105 F.) Then, they run out into ice cold water where the temperature can be as cold as -10 C (20 F.) What is the difference in temperature between the sauna and the ice water?

Your Turn Think of a situation where the temperature changes from below zero to above zero or from above zero to below zero. Write a problem for other students to solve using a thermometer number line.

Challenge: Elevation Changes in the U.S.A. The highest point in the United States is the summit of Mount McKinley (Denali) in Alaska. This mountain is 20,320 feet above sea level. The lowest point in the United States is in Death Valley California. Here, it is 282 feet below sea level. What is the difference in elevation between the summit of McKinley and Death Valley?

Temperature Extremes Temperature can change quickly in the mountains. One day in the Alps, it was 55 degrees Farenheit at 3 in the afternoon. By 2 in the morning, it was -15 degrees Farenheit. What was the change in temperature?

Warm it Up This special furnace is used for heating and cooling chemicals. Did you know that oxygen is a liquid when it’s cold? If oxygen is heated up from the temperature at which it is a liquid about 1150 degrees Kelvin it ionizes and glows. If oxygen ionizes at 1000 degrees Kelvin, at what temperature is it a liquid?

Integer Puzzle This morning, Niberson decided to bike to school. After biking for 1 mile, Niberson realized that he left his homework at his house. He turned around and went 1 mile back to his house to get his homework. Niberson biked back to school but realized that he was early (biking takes way less time than the bus.) So Niberson biked an extra ½ mile to get breakfast at the landmark center. After breakfast, Niberson biked to the school. If it is 3 miles from Niberson’s house to the school- how far did he ride?

Tiger Woods had the best all time pro golf score- Guess what it was.

Tiger Woods had one of the best all time golf scores- it was -18.

Classwork: Try “connections” on page 19, #s 39-43 (remember that in golf “par” means zero) and 48-54

Agenda Review Classwork/Homework, 19, 39-43. 20, 48-53 Word problems Homework, rewriting number sentences (the +/-)

2.3 The +/- connection Rewrite addition/subtraction sentences Page 29 A, 1-2 C, 1 and 3

3.3 Division of Integers Remind students that division problems can be written as fractions.

Rules for Multiplying Integers A negative multiplied/divided by a negative is positive A positive multiplied/divided by a negative is negative A positive multiplied/divided by a positive is positive

Geography The highest point in Asia is Mount Everest at 8850 meters. The shore of the Dead Sea, the lowest point in Asia, is about 410 meters below sea level. What is the difference between these elevations?

Weather In Fairfield, Montana, on December 24, 1924, the air temperature dropped a record amount. At noon, the temperature was 63F. Twelve hours later, the temperature was -21F. What was the change in temperature?

Math Puzzle Warm-Up The air temperature in the atmosphere decreases at the rate of 9 ºC every 300 meters. What height would a plane have to fly to experience a temperature of −81 ºC? The temperature is 0º C at sea level.

Math Puzzle Warm-Up In a well there is 800 liters of water. At the top there is a pipe that deposits 25L per minute into the well, and at the bottom there is another pipe which withdraws 30L per minute from the same well. How many liters of water will there be in the well after 15 minutes of the pipes functioning?

Plan for Dividing Integers Review rules for sign in multiplication/division of integers Connections between fractions and division: Divide a snack into three parts. How much does each person get? Practice dividing integers with AAA math

Math Puzzle Warm-Up Sam spent one-fourth of his life as a boy, one eighth as a young man, and one-half as an old man. If Sam spent 12 years as a boy, then how many years did he spend as an old man?

Order of Operations Review exponents. Solve number sentences with all operations, up to 5 operations.

Agenda: Day 1 Review integers with all operations. Introduce order of operations w problem 4.1- Page 61 Guided Practice: p. 63, B & D HW: p. 69, 1 & 2, all.

Agenda: Day 2 Warm-Up Puzzle PEMDAS card game example PEMDAS Cards

Puzzle Put parenthesis into this expression to make it have as large of a sum/product as possible. 6 – 2 * 2 + 4 2

PEMDAS cards rules Pick 4 integer number cards. Use any operations to make an expression Put the numbers in order to get the biggest product Get points for your product If your opponent can think of an expression using the same numbers that yields a bigger product, they steal your turn and get that many points. First person to 500 wins.

4.3 The Distributive Property Distribute negative integers across expressions. Distribute multiplication over addition expressions.

Agenda: Day 1 Vocabulary: Distributive Property Class examples Guided work: Expanded and factored forms p. 67, A 1, 2, & 6, B 1 & 6, C 1 & 3 Independent Work/HW: A 3-5, B 3-5, C 3-6

Vocabulary Distributive Property- Muliplication distributes over division.

Example: Solve the expression 2 * 5 + 2 * 4 = 2 * (5 + 4) =

Example: Solve the expression 2 * 5 + 2 * 4 = 2 * (5 + 4) = Why do these expressions yield the same product? Can you think of another way to use these numbers in an equation that would give the same product?

Example: Solve the expression Expanded Form: 2 * 5 + 2 * 4 = Factored Form: 2 * (5 + 4) = Why do these expressions yield the same product? Can you think of another way to use these numbers in an equation that would give the same product?

Algebraic Distributive Property Expanded Form: a * b + a * c = Factored Form: a * (b + c) = What if a = 3, b = 5, and c = 7?

Day 2 Agenda Warm-up word problem Guided Practice: P. 69, 1b & c, 2 d, 13, 15,

Warm-Up Problem Lisa and 3 of her friends are going hiking. Lisa buys 2 bottles of water and 3 packs of trail mix for them. Can she go through the “15 items or less” express check- out?
