Look at these things below and try to GROUP them into the 2 most simple groups: tyre, mould, kitten, Hibiscus flower, circle, horse, weta, light, blue whale, pukeko, cup, bat, grass, roof, Kowhai tree, calf, octopus, sea urchin, table, potato, marble, mushroom, sand, virus, grasshopper, tape worm, moss, cellphone, bacteria.

How do you know what is Dead and what is Alive? In science we give them special names: Dead= non-living Living= organism Dead or Alive

To be classified as living, an organism must be able to carry out the 8 life functions below: M- movement M- movement R- Respiration (chemical process in cells which release energy) R- Respiration (chemical process in cells which release energy) S- Sensitivity (sensing the environment) S- Sensitivity (sensing the environment) C- Circulation (of food, gases & waste around the body) C- Circulation (of food, gases & waste around the body) G- Growth G- Growth R- Reproduction R- Reproduction E- Excretion ( removal of waste products) E- Excretion ( removal of waste products) N- Nutrition ( taking in nutrients/ food) N- Nutrition ( taking in nutrients/ food)

Using MRS GREN to classify these: For example: –Mould Wind Crab Fire seed

If we look back at the list we had, from the category of organisms, we should be able to put them into 2 more groups What are they? Plants and animals. What are the differences between plants and animals?

AnimalsPlants Usually mobile or can move limbs Are fixed or floating, some parts can move slowly Get food by eating plants or other animals Make their own food by Photosynthesis Have nervous system and brain Have no nervous system or brain Have well-developed sense organs Have no special sense organs

What are cells? Cells are the building blocks of most organisms and the basic unit of all living things. For example: blood cells By looking closely at the back of our hands, we can see some cells. They seem to be different triangle-like shapes.

When looking closely at plant cells and animal cells To look closely at something at cellular level, we need to use a M_______ ! We should find at least 3 differences between animal cells and plant cells.
