9 European Heritage Label Aims: Strengthen citizens’ sense of belonging to the EU, enhance profile of sites which have played a key role in the history and building of the EU Act: Decision of the EP and the Council, non-binding, participation of MS will be on a voluntary basis, expected 2011 Background: 2006: Label as an intergovernmental initiative 2008: Request to transform initiative into a formal action of the EU Today: 64 sites in 17 EU MS and Switzerland

10 European Heritage Label Selection process: Importance of symbolism of sites – not aesthetics, promotion – not conservation Pre-selection in MS, final selection at EU level Budget: EUR 1 350 000 – but not for restoration of sites ! Next step: Vote on report in European Parliament (16 December 2010) Actions to take: at national level: choice of experts, proposals of sites
