1. Lesson 11 Unsolved Mysteries1 We live in an age of science. That means most of us believe in the ability of science to provide answers to what we do not understand. Still, there are mysteries in the world around us that science has not fully explained2. But these mysteries continue to have such a strong hold on our imagination. Let’s look at some of these mysteries.

2. Bermuda Traingle One of the most famous mysteries is the Bermuda Triangle*, sometimes referred to as the Seas of Death. The Bermuda Triangle is an area of the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of Florida. For hundreds of years, ships have disappeared in this area, leaving no survivors to explain how they met their fate. Even fighter planes disappeared without a trace in the Triangle during World War II. So did the rescue3 planes sent out to search for them.

4. Loch Ness It has been suggested that the creature may actually be a fish-eating dinosaur7 which has somehow survived into the modern world. But, even though scientists have searched the lake carefully with the most modern equipment8, no such monster has ever been found. Still, Loch Ness is 23 miles long and very deep—a good place for a monster to hide.

6. Bigfoot and Yeti The story of the Yeti is similar to that of Bigfoot, who is thought by some to live in the wilderness areas of the American northwest. Campers12 and hikers13 in the forests there have over the years reported seeing a huge, shy creature who immediately ran away when spotted14. In 1967, a photographer15 in northern California actually filmed what looks like a tall, hairy, ape-like creature moving away into the trees. Is he a relative of the Yeti?
