CELLULAR RESPIRATION The breakdown of organic compounds to form ATP needed for cellular reactions

Cellular respiration occurs in all living things. Plants, animals, protists, fungi, bacteria,

Cellular respiration occurs in stages, each stage requires enzymes, as the breakdown of glucose is A controlled breakdown – not like burning glucose Like we can do outside of the body.

PART ONE OF CELLULAR RESPIRATION – GLYCOLYSIS Means destruction of glucose -occurs in the cytoplasm -occurs in all living things,

So all living things share the same DNA which produces the same enzymes (Proteins) to perform the Same task - glycolysis.

After glycolysis, many paths can be taken. The one taken depends On the enzymes present in the organism, (genes build enzymes) and the environmental conditions

A. Anaerobic respiration – aka fermentation 1. alcoholic fermentation 2. lactic acid fermentation 3. acetic acid fermentation

B. Aerobic respiration – requires oxygen Occurs in the mitochondria Involves the Krebs Cycle and electron transport

ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN: PRODUCES 34 ATP’S
