4 Tectonic Plates The earth's surface is broken into seven large and many small moving plates. These plates, each about 50 miles thick, move relative to one another an average of a few inches a year. Three types of movement are recognized at the boundaries between plates: convergent, divergent and transform- fault.

5 Names of the principal plates North american plate, Eurasia plate, Africa plate, South american plate, australian plate, pacific plate.

6 Earthquakes One of the most frightening and destructive phenomena of nature is a severe earthquake and its terrible aftereffects. An earthquake is a sudden movement of the Earth, caused by the abrupt release of strain that has accumulated over a long time.

7 earthquakes For hundreds of millions of years, the forces of plate tectonics have shaped the Earth as the huge plates that form the Earth's surface slowly move over, under, and past each other. Sometimes the movement is gradual.

8 earthquakes At other times, the plates are locked together, unable to release the accumulating energy. When the accumulated energy grows strong enough, the plates break free. If the earthquake occurs in a populated area, it may cause many deaths and injuries and extensive property damage.

9 Earthquakes in Peru In Peru the earthquakes are common. They are very strong (sometimes) and sometimes they are lower. In 1974 a strong earthquake in Lima make a lot of people die and some people lose their houses and all their properties.

10 Volcanoes There are several ways in which a volcano can form, just as there are several different kinds of volcanoes. Hot magma, rising from lower reaches of the Earth, eventually, but not always, erupts onto the surface. During the eruption, lava and ash form a cone. This cone is what we know as a volcano.

11 volcanoes Strong earthquakes accompany rising magma just before an eruption. Volcanism is part of the process by which a planet cools off. Among the different kinds of volcanoes are: (1) shield volcanoes, (2) cinder cones, and (3)composite cone volcanoes.
