Erosion Directions: - Click “Slide Show” then “View Show” to view the power point. -Record all notes and complete all tasks in your notebook. - If a page doesn’t have a directions box like this, just get the notes.

Erosion Erosion - the removal of ground materials (soil, sand, rocks) by water or wind. Taking rocks, soil, and/or sand from one place… … and depositing them somewhere else.

Types of Erosion 1. Glaciers  a large, slowly moving, river of ICE

Glacier Example: Iceland - Glaciers are very powerful. - They carve out huge chunks of land forming canyons and valleys thus creating mountains out of flat land.

Glaciers – how they form 1.Explain how glaciers form. 2.Describe the climate that can support glaciers.

Effects of Glaciers Appalachian Mountains – Old Glacial Effects Alaska – New Glacial Effects

2. Wind Erosion - wind blows sand and small particles - This exposes the larger rocks below and smoothes them down.

Wind Erosion Causes dust storms Harms crops - Copy the effects of Wind Erosion - What would be the economic effect of wind erosion? Create a real example to demonstrate your answer.

3. Water Erosion (2 types) A. Rivers  rivers cut through rock carving out canyons

3. Water Erosion – 2 types B. Coastal Erosion – occurs when waves carry beach land out to sea

Sketches Sketch each type of erosion in your notebook. Label each type.

On the move… -You just got offered a job making $20 Million a year as a professional video game player, IPOD tester, internet surfer… -However, you are forced to move to one of the three locations marked on the maps on the next slide. -Unfortunately, each town you have to choose from is in a high erosion area.

Task (only complete this once)  1.Which town would you MOST like to live in? 2.Explain why. 3.Which town would you LEAST like to live in? 4.Explain why. Option A – Witchita, Kansas

Task (only complete this once)  1.Which town would you MOST like to live in? 2.Explain why. 3.Which town would you LEAST like to live in? 4.Explain why. Option B – Gulfport, Mississippi Annual Shoreline Change Moderately DamagedSeverely Damaged Relatively Stable

Task (only complete this once)  1.Which town would you MOST like to live in? 2.Explain why. 3.Which town would you LEAST like to live in? 4.Explain why. Option C – Glacier Bay, Alaska
