Introduction Digital Image Processing Instructor: Dr. Cheng-Chien LiuCheng-Chien Liu Department of Earth Sciences National Cheng Kung University Last updated: 11 September 2003 Chapter 0

Syllabus  Course name: Digital Image Processing  Credit: 3  Prerequisite: Graduate students Undergraduate students of the third or four year Calculus, (at least one programming language)  Time: Wednesday 14:10 – 15:00 Friday 10:10 – 12:00  Place:

Objectives  Provide/introduce students The basic training in computer languages, mathematics and numerical analysis The fundamental principles and applications of digital image processing  Students will learn The computational skills and develop an ability to process the digital image  Students who are dealing with the digital form of data/image will be benefited by taking this course

Textbook  Image Processing: The Fundamentals Maria Petrou and Panagiota Bosdogianni John Wiley & Sons 354 pp. 1999. 高立代理 成大圖書部可代訂

References  Digital image processing, Kenneth R. Castleman, Prentice Hall, 667 pp. 1996.  數位影像處理-活用 Matlab, 繆紹綱, 全華科技圖書公司, 536 pp. 1999.

Schedule  Introduction  Linux/Unix Environment and basic commands  Programming language - Fortran  Programming language - C++  Programming language - Visual C++  Programming language - Matlab  The Generic Mapping Tool  Numerical Analysis

Schedule (cont.)  Basic Mathematics  Image Transformations  Statistical Description of Images  Image Enhancement  Two-Dimensional Filter  Image Restoration  Image Segmentation  Pattern Recognition

Some questions  Who am I? http://mail.ncku.edu.tw/~ccliu88/  Why are we here? You and I, …  Why exams? Acquire knowledge, …  Why taking lectures? Save time and efforts, …  Why Lab evaluation? Keep on the right track, …

Responses  Lecture notes on web  Three ways to be master of DIP Practice  Strategy Free access to the computer lab (issue entry card) 10 min on-site test every week On-site (mid-term and final) exams Monitoring student’s progress and grade  On-line report everybody’s grade every week

Grade  Lab evaluation 40%  Midterm exam(s) 30%  Final exam 30%

Laboratory Regulation  No computer games, MP3, pornography, DVD, movies or any illegal downloads The computers are endued with the most noble mission of education  No food or drink The computers are neither hungry nor thirsty  No shoes The computers got a delicate respiratory system  No changes of hardware or software The computers like the way they are

Enforcement of Regulation  Those who have the privilege of using the lab have the responsibility to report any violation of regulation  Camera system  Computer log file  Laboratory head Take in charge of this lab Take all responsibilities

Violation of Regulation  One violation, three points  Five points, revoke entry card  Stay with any violation without report, one point each

Limitation of student number  16  Make a serious consideration before taking this course  We still have chances in the future

Office hours  Monday: 14:00 – 17:00  Wednesday: 15:00 – 17:00  Friday: TGIF party  Anytime if necessary

Some issues  Representative Textbook Email  Name, Student ID number, Department/Year, Cell phone number, email address, (advisor’s name)  Introduce yourself Why take this course Background (computing) Research interests Accessible computer resources
