1 Learning Goal 9.2 – 9.3.15  Students will understand that cell respiration is the controlled release of energy from organic compounds to produce ATP, which in turn is used to provide energy for metabolic processes.

3 Breathe In... Breathe Out...  How is breathing related to the process of cellular respiration?  You will receive a petri dish  Observe the dish  Hold it close to your mouth and breathe on it  What do you observe?

Breathe Out...  How is breathing related to the process of cellular respiration?  You will receive a bottle of water with Bromthymol Blue indicator mixed with it.  DO NOT DRINK THE LIQUID!!!!!  Observe the color of the liquid  Take a straw, put it in the bottle and blow GENTLY  Blow for several minutes, observing color changes as they occur  Put the cap on the bottle and shake it.  Observe the color

5 What is Respiration?  Cellular respiration is the process by which the chemical energy stored in the bonds of organic molecules is released and partially captured in the form of ATP.

6 Overview of Aerobic Respiration  Reactants:  Oxygen  Organic compounds  Carbohydrates  Proteins  Lipids  Products:  ATP  Carbon Dioxide  Water

7 Respiration  Respiration can occur in the presence or absence of oxygen.  Respiration that occurs in the presence of oxygen is called aerobic respiration.

8 Aerobic Respiration Overview A catabolic process – molecule is broken down, energy is released.

9 2 ATP molecules needed to start the process 4 ATP molecules are produced, but there were two to begin with, so the net gain is 2 ATP molecules. 6 carbons 3 carbons
