1 & RELEASE THE POTENTIAL
FISH! CATCH THE ENERGY & RELEASE THE POTENTIAL

2 Why Fish & Why Me?

3 The Cold Hard Truth You are not working in early childhood to get rich. Your employer is not responsible for your career. It is not your employer’s job to fix anyone. You make the work environment better or worse every day. Only you are in charge of you and the choices you make. Free Will

4 Why FISH! FISH! is a philosophy, not a program FISH! is an invitation
FISH! creates a common language FISH! is genuine FISH! is playful FISH! is an ongoing journey FISH! isn’t “something else” you have to do FISH Is a philosophy, not a program- You implement a program to change or fix people, but there’s nothing inspiring about being “programmed.” You can’t implement a philosophy. Instead you explore it, try it out and decide if it’s right for you. If it is, you live it because you believe in it. FISH! Is an invitiation - The quickest way to kill FISH! is to mandate it. You can, however, invite people to be part of an environment in which people care about each other and their commitments. When people see these qualities flourishing in others, they want to join in because they want to improve their own lives, too. FISH! Creates a common language - Language changes everything. To begin to change anything, we have to change the way we speak about things, the way we feel about things, and definitely the way we act about things day in and day out. The four principles of FISH! — Be There, Play, Make Their Day and Choose Your Attitude — are the basis of a new language everyone can understand and connect to instantly. FISH Is genuine - Originally modeled by fishmongers who decided to choose their attitude and become world famous, The FISH! Philosophy gets into the hearts and minds of everyone at work. Focused on the individual first, FISH! is simple, common wisdom that everyone can embrace. FISH! Is playful - Creativity, inspiration and innovation are directly disproportionate to how tightly we’re wound! Nobody’s talking about throwing patients, spreadsheets or hamburgers at one another like the guys throw fish in the original film. What we are talking about is throwing yourself into your work in a wholehearted and lighthearted way. FISH! Is ongoing - FISH! cuts across all industries and all organizational departments, functions, goals and objectives. As a philosophy that’s infused into a culture over time, you can’t “do” FISH! and be done with it. It’s not the newest motivational fad. It’s not the flavor of the month. It’s an opportunity to create and be part of a group that honors individual spirit and the right to choose. FISH! Isn’t something else - In most cases, FISH! complements what you’re already doing — whether it’s launching a new company, new customer service initiative, new leadership style or any number of other learning programs tailored to specific organizational goals. Because FISH! is focused on “who you’re being while you’re doing what you’re doing,” The FISH! Philosophy is also a powerful, flexible platform that can help spike and support many of your other goals and programs.

5 History of FISH Pikes Place Fish Market- Seattle, Washington
How to Become World Famous Pike’s Place Fish Market- John Yokoyama purchased Pike Place Fish in At that time, John was one of several employees of the quiet, unassuming little fish stand. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to sell the business, John’s employer offered him the opportunity to purchase Pike Place Fish. As a young man of 25, John was at first hesitant to buy the business. The monthly payments on his new 1965 Buick Riviera, however, were taking much of his $ weekly pay. He decided he could do better on an owner’s salary. John purchased Pike Place Fish to help make his car payments - amazing how things turned out! Becoming World Famous - The first step for us at Pike Place Fish was to decide who we wanted to be. In the words of John Yokoyama:“In one of our early Pike Place Fish meetings with Jim (our coach from bizFutures), we began an inquiry into "Who do we want to be? We wanted to create a new future for ourselves. One of the young kids working for me said, “Hey! Let's be World Famous!” At first I thought, “World Famous…what a stupid thing to say!” But the more we talked about it, the more we all got excited about being World Famous. So we committed to it. We added “World Famous” to our logo and had it printed on our shipping boxes World Famous - What does this mean - being world famous?” And we created our own definition. For us it means going beyond just providing outstanding service to people. It means really being present with people and relating to them as human beings. You know, stepping outside the usual “we’re in business and you’re a customer” way of relating to people and intentionally being with them right now, in the present moment, person to person. We take all our attention off ourselves to be only with them…looking for ways to serve them. We’re out to discover how we can make their day. We’ve made a commitment to have our customers leave with the experience of having been served. They experience being known and appreciated whether they buy fish or not. And it’s not good enough just to want that - it takes an unrelenting commitment. We’ve made it our job to make sure that experience happens for every customer.” To us, being ‘World Famous’ is a way of being. You can’t manualize it. It gets created by each one of us, newly every time. It comes out differently for different people. It also depends on who the customer is…how they react. It’s about taking care of people. We’re always on the lookout for how we can make a difference in people’s lives. People want to copy us - to do what we’re doing. We keep telling them, ‘Your success isn’t in doing what we do; it’s in discovering your own way. Don’t do what we do - we made it all up…do what inspires you…make it up! You just have to be (yourself…what inspires you). And it means commit yourself to who you say you are: act like it, think like it, look like it, feel like it, speak it…be it! You will create your own way by just being yourself, doing what inspires you. The secret to our secret lies in our commitment to being who we say we are. JUST BE IT. Your challenge is to ‘just be’ who you want to be…for free…just because you said so.

6 FISH! Philosophy Play Be There Make Their Day Choose Your Attitude
Play:  Work made fun gets done, especially when we choose to do tasks in a lighthearted, spontaneous way. Play is not just an activity; it’s a state of mind that brings new energy to the task at hand and sparks creative solutions. Make Their Day, Go M.A.D.:  Make A Difference! When you make someone’s day, or moment, through a small kindness or unforgettable engagement, you can turn even routine encounters into special memories. When you help others, when you reach out to others...you make a difference. Be There:  Right Here, Right Now! The glue in our humanity is in being fully present for one another. Being there also is a great way to practice wholeheartedness and fight burnout, for it is those halfhearted tasks you perform while juggling other things that wear you out. Be there for your family, friends, and co-workers. Take good care of yourself too! Choose Your Attitude:  When you look for the worst, you will find it everywhere. When you learn that you have the power to choose your response to what life brings, you can look for the best and find opportunities you never imagined possible. If you find yourself with an attitude that is not what you want it to be, you can choose a new one. Ensure your positive outlook is contagious!
