I can revise a text in order to create cohesive meaning. I can identify dialect. I can distinguish the difference between dialect and standard English. I can determine why an author will use dialect and what effect dialect can have on a text. I can create a writing using dialect and standard English.

* Answer questions 7 and 8. * Be prepared to justify your answer.

* What is dialect? Determine how to identify and comprehend/paraphrase dialect. * How does dialect effect the reader’s understanding of a text? * What is the difference between dialect and standard English? * When/Where do you use dialect?

1. Reading of two poems- one written in dialect and the other in standard English. 2. Compare and contrast the two poems. Justify your findings! 3. Read an excerpt from a novel. Underline/note uses of dialect within that excerpt. 4. Discuss the effect. 5. Writing Activity 6. Re-write using standard English and discuss why changes were made. 7. Wrap Up/Exit Slip- discuss the effect of dialect, journal what you have learned about dialect and standard English.

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEeRYwbA JYY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEeRYwbA JYY * Listen to the pronunciations from the characters.

* When or with whom do you use a different dialect? * When or in what situations would you use formal/informal dialect?

* Paul Laurence Dunbar * Born on June 27, 1872, Paul Laurence Dunbar was one of the first African-American poets to gain national recognition. His parents Joshua and Matilda Murphy Dunbar were freed slaves from Kentucky. His parents separated shortly after his birth, but Dunbar would draw on their stories of plantation life throughout his writing career.

* You will read 2 poems, one written in dialect and the other written in standard English. * Both are written by the same author. “When Malindy Sings”- we will do the 1 st stanza together, you and a partner will do the next 2 stanzas, and you will do the 4 th stanza on your own.

* Compare and contrast the language used in two poems. * You may work with a partner in order to create your Venn diagram. Even though you are working with a partner, everyone should have their own Venn diagram. * Find specific words, grammatical usage, punctuation, and spelling that signals whether the author is using dialect or standard English. * Share with the whole group.

* Why do you think the author chose to use dialect for “When Malindy Sings” and standard English for “We Wear the Mask”? * Who is speaking in the poems (narrator)? * Who is the audience for the poem? * Would the poems be as effective if they were written in standard English instead of dialect, and vice versa?

* Read the excerpt and underline and note examples of when the author uses dialect. * Re-write your section into standard English. * Share!

* What effect does dialect have on this excerpt? * Why would the author use dialect as opposed to standard English? * How does it contribute to the meaning of the text? * What can you infer about the characters?

* Think about a conversation you recently had with a friend. * (on a school appropriate topic ;) ) * You may use your phone and look back at your text messages! * Try to recall exactly how that conversation went. * Write down everything that was said in that conversation. Include those slang words and specific dialect you commonly use with your friends. * This should be about a page in length.

* Find someone and switch papers. * Now re-write the conversation: * you must change the audience of this conversation to: parents, teachers, principals, employers, etc. * And use standard English

* Now in a small group, create a list of at least one change each group member made and the reason why each change was made. * Share with the class!

* Essential Questions * What is dialect? Determine how to identify and comprehend/paraphrase dialect. * How does dialect effect the reader’s understanding of a text? * What is the difference between dialect and standard English? * When/Where do you use dialect? * Think about the effect dialect has on everyday conversation and why authors use dialect in their writing. * Journal what you have learned from this assignment about the difference between dialect and standard English. * Think about the power of the language you choose to use in casual vs. formal writing.
