1 What is the Riser Process? The process and assignment of students into their appropriate school with special education services offered per the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Target grades: Preschool to Kindergarten Transitional-K & EEU-K to 1 st grade 5 th grade to Middle School 8 th grade to High School

11 Experimental Education Unit (EEU) University of Washington Kindergarten classroom funded by Seattle Public Schools 18 students --- with and without IEPs 1 special education teacher, 1 Instructional support Different school calendar schedule than SPS (4 days a week with Friday as a ½ day, etc) Different start and end time than SPS Tours: Contact Chris Matsumoto, Director

12 All students with Resource/ICS in their IEPs will initially be assigned to their attendance area school. Students with other Service Models reflected in their IEPs will be assigned to a school that offers that Service Model. Services Model are in Designated Schools in Designated Attendance Areas. Assignment will be based on service needs and their attendance area school. The EEU- Kindergarten will be a Resource/ICS service model. Families will indicate an interest in the EEU Kindergarten on an interest form that will be part of the Riser paperwork. This interest form will be separate from the IEP Riser process. SPS and EEU will work together to assign students. School Assignment

13 Seattle Schools & EEU Partnership To improve public education together… Seattle Schools funds classrooms at the EEU which allows: – Researchers to shape best practices and try instructional strategies with students in classrooms – Future and current teachers receive hands-on training in special education The EEU provides on-going technical assistance and training to Seattle Schools which allows: -- Current General ed. and Special ed. teachers in the Seattle School District to receive hands-on training, support, and professional development. – Students, families and educators to benefit from the partnership between Seattle Schools and the EEU
