Unit 6: Chemical Compounds How does the interaction of valance electrons form chemical compounds?

Bohr Model

What is a Bohr Model? Shows all the protons, neutrons, and electrons contained within an atom. Protons and neutrons are drawn in the Nucleus. Electrons are drawn on ENERGY LEVELS or SHELLS or ELECTRON CLOUDS (the rings found around the nucleus).

Energy Levels Energy levels can only hold a certain amount of electrons. Energy LevelMaximum Number of Electrons 12 electrons 28 electrons 318 electrons 432 electrons 550 electrons

Valence Electrons: an electron of an atom, located in the outermost shell (valence shell) of the atom, that can be transferred to or shared with another atom. The maximum number of valence electrons is 8

Practice draw the Bohr models for the following elements 1.Li - Lithium 2.Na - Sodium 3.Be – Beryllium 4.Mg - Magnesium 5.B - Boron 6.Al – Aluminum 7.F – Fluorine 8.Cl – Chlorine 9.Ne - Neon 10.Ar - Argon 1. Using your Bohr Models identify how many valance electrons are in each element. (Valance = outer shell) 2. What group number that each element is in? 3. Do you see any similarities between elements and or differences?

Group Number vs. V.E. ElementValence ElectronsGroup Number Li Na Be Mg B Al F Cl Ne Ar Note: The GROUP number tells you how many valence electrons you have. Always subtract 10 from groups 13 to 18! So. Group 13 = 3, 14 = 4, 15 = 5, and so on.

Color Code: Groups vs. Valence Electrons OMIT KEY Group 1 = 1 V.E.

Valence Electron Foldable Using your BLUE TEXTBOOK – Make the foldable on Page 601 – Use Pages 602 – 621 to complete KEEP FOLDABLE and BRING IT BACK to CLASS FOR AN ASSIGNMENT MONDAY – Will be able to use! That will count as QUIZ!
