Succession The replacement of one community with another

Glacier Succession http://bcs.whfreeman.com/thelifewire/conten t/chp55/55020.html http://bcs.whfreeman.com/thelifewire/conten t/chp55/55020.html Take notes + create a flow chart of events

Primary vs. Secondary Clip http://www.geowords.org/ensci/imagesbook/ 04_03_succession.swf

Primary Succession A community is established in a fairly lifeless area First life forms are usually bacteria, then lichens Soil eventually develops, then plants are established

Example of primary succession A retreating glacier leaves a moraine, a soil-laden area where life has the potential to take root.

Secondary Succession Occurs in an area where disturbance has occurred, but the soil is intact – After a forest fire – After a hurricane

Example of secondary succession

Are pioneer species r or k species?

R vs K species R species -breeding at a young age -a short lifespan -producing many offspring quickly -small offspring -high mortality rates of young -nonexistent parental care. K species -long maturation time -breeding relatively late in life -a long lifespan -producing relatively few offspring -large newborn offspring -low mortality rates of young, -extensive parental care.parental care Examples of a K-selected species include elephants, bonobo apes and humans. Examples of r-selected species include waterfleas, insects, and bacteria.

Make graphs for r vs. k species

Exit Quiz 3 1.Clear table 2.Write in Your Name and Period 3.Only bubble the first 4 numbers of your ID (Mauricio, Thao, and 1 more person’s IDs have been chnaged) 4.Wait until the timer goes off to line up and scan quiz
