SECTION 1 VOCABULARY

Section 1: Vocabulary Character: Qualities or traits. A person with high character has integrity, maturity and consistency. Habits: Things we do consistently; things we do on “auto pilot”. Paradigm: The way we think about and see things.

Section 1: Vocabulary Principle: A general fundamental truth; natural law. Be Proactive: Think before one acts and take responsibility for the choice made. Synergy: Two or more people producing more together than they could have done separately; based on valuing differences.

Section 1: Vocabulary Goal: A specific thing that you are trying to accomplish by a certain time. Self-awareness: Understanding why you feel the way you do. Personal Mission Statement: A personal credo or motto that states what your life is about. It is like a blueprint for your life.

Section 1: Vocabulary Be Reactive: To make choices based on feelings, moods and emotions. Role: The position you occupy in relation to another; Lose-lose: People with this paradigm approach differences with fear. They avoid conflicts, which therefore cannot be resolved, and everybody loses.

Section 1: Vocabulary Lose-Win: People with this attitude are easily intimidated and easily give in or go along with others; they fail to assert their own thoughts and feelings. Win-Lose: These people achieve what they want at the expense of others. Win-Win: These people believe that anyone can win; there is more than enough to go around for everyone, when each person’s interests and needs are understood and respected.

Section 1: Vocabulary Paradigm Shift: When we change the way we think about or see things. Diversity: Showing a variety of differences among things or people. Effective: Getting what you want over and over again.

Section 1: Vocabulary Self Respect Proper esteem or regard for the dignity of one's character Cooperation An act or instance of working or acting together for a common purpose or benefit Participation The act of taking part, as in some action or attempt

Section 1: Vocabulary Communication The imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs Listening Make an effort to hear something; to pay attention Self Esteem A realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself Self Efficacy Confidence in the ability to cope with life’s challenges; leads to a sense of control over one’s life.

Criteria Paragraphs should be five structured sentences each; no choppy, short sentences. Start each paragraph with different transitional words. Recheck for errors in sentence structure, word usage, punctuation and spelling.

Short Essay This section is worth 30 points (or 30%) There does not need to be an intro/closing paragraph, but the paragraphs should make sense when read together. They must fit the criteria of a paragraph that we’ve just reviewed. 6 of the 30 points (20%) of your grade will be based on spelling and grammar. We will grade together as a class.
