Mexican War? EXAMPLE
12
The Concept is……. Manifest Destiny The belief that the United States had the clear right and duty to expand to the Pacific Ocean. Goal: make the United States more powerful while educating and “saving” natives and Mexicans that lived in the west
13
Reason #1 = Texas What caused the Mexican War? Americans moved into Texas (1820’s) led by Stephen Austin. Had slaves and were Protestant (both against Mexican law) 1830’s: Mexico began to enforce those laws when General Santa Anna took power. 1836: Texas won independence from Mexico (Remember the Alamo) 1845: Texas became a state (was annexed by the U.S.) = Mexico very angry – wanted it back!
14
Reason #2 = Manifest Destiny What caused the Mexican War? Belief that the United States had the right and duty to expand to the Pacific Ocean. James K. Polk supported this idea. He was elected because he promised to expand the U.S. or fight! (Either Oregon or Texas) Problems: Opponents worried about slavery spreading The war was very unpopular in the North.
15
Why is it a problem if the US takes land from Mexico or Britain?
16
Reason #3 = Americans in Mexican Territory And? Americans lived in Texas, New Mexico (Utah, Arizona, and Nevada were included), and California. For inexpensive land, gold, or motivated by religion had moved to those territories. Those people wanted to become part of the U.S. Brigham Young led Mormons to Utah
17
The colored diagonal lines show the “disputed territory.” This is land both the US and Mexico claimed because they could not agree on the Southern border of Texas.
18
The Mexican War What happened in the War? 1846-48: Started over Texas and where the border was. Compromised with Britain over Oregon Americans under Zachary Taylor overpowered Mexico. Americans took over New Mexico and California during the war. By 1847, Americans took Mexico City. Mexico forced to agree to the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo: gave California and New Mexico to the US for $15 million (Mexican Cession).
20
What will this mean?
21
What does it mean = Manifest Destiny leads to problems over slavery!
22
RESULTS What were the results of the war? 1.Manifest Destiny was achieved! 2.Reopened the slavery debate = Missouri Compromise no longer worked! Wilmot Proviso (outlawing slavery in the Mexican Session) passed the House but not the Senate Free-Soil Party created to stop the spread of slavery (10% of the votes in 1848)
23
Results Continued 3. War Heroes = important leaders and experience for years to come 4. New settlers: Mormons to Utah, the Gold Rush to California (mostly from North), and more immigration (from all over) 5. People from different cultures living together: Diversity = Tolerance!
