4 III. Monroe Doctrine (A) With the end of the War of 1812 and the Federalist party, the United States entered a period of natural pride and political unity known as the Era of Good Feelings. (B) It was during this period that President James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine in 1823. (1) Monroe stated that the United States would not tolerate European intervention in the affairs of any independent nation in the Americas. (2) He also made it clear that the American continents were no longer open to European colonization and that the US would view any future attempts to colonize as acts of aggression. (3) Finally, the president promised that the United States would not interfere in the internal affairs of other American countries, nor to those of European nations.

5 IV. Manifest Destiny (A) As the United States approached the middle of the 19 th century, a great sense of nationalism, pride in the United States, inspired many to want to add to the US territory. (B) Many leaders and citizens believed it was God’s sovereign will for the US to expand and posses territory all the way to the Pacific Ocean. (C) Those who shared this conviction referred to it as “Manifest Destiny,” and it inspired many to see western settlement as a sacred duty.

6 V. Missouri Compromise (A) Conflict Over Slavery (1) No political issue caused more division in the United States as it expanded west than the institution of slavery. (2) Free northern states opposed the addition of new slave states. (3) Conversely, southern states feared that the addition of free states would leave them at a political disadvantage.

7 (B) Balance of Power (1) All new states north of the line would be free states, while those to the south would be slave states. (2) It was designed to maintain the balance of power in Washington, DC.
