2. The first information comes from the year 997 when Adalbert – the bishop of Prague – came with his Christian mission to a place which he called Gyddanyzc. The 16th century brought Gdańsk into “the Golden Age” and the city became powerful, wealthy and famous.

3. What is the city famous for? Gdańsk is known as the place where World War II started.The time between 1939 and 1945 was the most painful and tragic for the city. The city is also known as the place where „Solidarity” movement orginated. The Gdańsk Shipyard was the exact place where Solidarity was born.

4. What is the city admired for? Gdańsk is one of the most beautiful historical cities in Poland. It is here you can see the biggest brick-shrine in Europe: St.Mary’s Church. The medieval port crane in Gdańsk is regarded as one of the city’s symbols. It was designed for handling heavy goods. Destroyed many times, it was reconstructed after World War II and turned into an exhibit.

5. The Main Town Hall of the city, richly decorated, comes from the end of the 15th century.

6. Długi Targ is a central place in Gdańsk. It is the most representative place in the city. Most famous places of Gdańsk were located in this street. The Neptun Fontain is situated in the centre of Długi Targ. Build by A.van den Blocke, it’s one of the symbols of the city. Pigeons can always be found around the Fountain.

7. Modern city of Gdańsk Gdańsk has many theatres, cinemas, restaurants and places for entertainment. Here, in summer, there is St Dominic Fair – the biggest fair in Poland.
