IEEE CCNC, Jan. 5, 2005 www.instat.com/R/wcpanwww.instat.com/R/mmit Stephen Wood UWB Technology Strategist Communications Technology Lab Emerging markets based on MBOA UWB including developments in Wireless USB & Wireless 1394 Roberto Aiello Founder & CTO Kosar Jaff Product Unit Manager Windows Networking & Devices Technology Group Marilynn Green Senior Research Engineer Nokia Research Center Bob Huang Senior Technical Manager Advanced Wireless Technology Group Joyce Putscher Director & Principal Analyst Converging Markets & Technologies Group IEEE CCNC January 5, 2005

IEEE CCNC, Jan. 5, 2005 www.instat.com/R/wcpanwww.instat.com/R/mmit Emerging markets for UWB, Wireless USB & Wireless 1394 Chair, Joyce Putscher Director, Converging Markets & Technologies Group & Principal Analyst WPAN In-Stat

IEEE CCNC, Jan. 5, 2005 www.instat.com/R/wcpanwww.instat.com/R/mmit General Positioning Wireless LAN/PAN DATAVOICE Narrowband Wideband Ultra-Wideband 802.11a, b, g Bluetooth PAN LAN Bluetooth 802.15.4 802.11e 802.11n W1394WUSB 802.15.4a (UWB) ZigBee

IEEE CCNC, Jan. 5, 2005 www.instat.com/R/wcpanwww.instat.com/R/mmit Progress UWB is PHY candidate for IEEE 802.15.3a: Flavor still not passed Multiband OFDM Alliance (MBOA) became a SIG –Over 150 members –MBOA PHY completed Wireless USB Promoter Group –USB 2.0-compatible protocol stack, working with WiMedia & MBOA –UWB PHY 1394 Trade Association –MBOA working with TA to develop FireWireless protocol stack –UWB PHY

IEEE CCNC, Jan. 5, 2005 www.instat.com/R/wcpanwww.instat.com/R/mmit Early 2005: Proprietary chipsets Jan 2005 CES: Prototype UWB-enabled CE devices, kits/adapters 1H05: Chipset integration into CE devices – testing stage & manufacturers ramp up Xmas 2005/2006: Line-powered devices (NOT battery-powered or mobile) like DTVs, PVRs, PCs Xmas 2006/2007: Battery-powered devices like digital camcorders and digital still cameras Mobile Phones? WW standard needed High-Speed UWB Market Rollout UWB transmissions not allowed worldwide yet - In process Goal to replace connectors, primarily USB and 1394 cables, between variety of CE and PC devices

IEEE CCNC, Jan. 5, 2005 www.instat.com/R/wcpanwww.instat.com/R/mmit UWB Silicon Trends Initially, mostly two-chip chipsets, but some targeting early single chip versions Radios in SiGe & BiCMOS Some single-chip PHY: RF Transceiver, TX/RX Switch & BB Many solutions will migrate to a single chip 2006-2007 Dedicated processor best for now – Host processing not expected to happen soon

IEEE CCNC, Jan. 5, 2005 www.instat.com/R/wcpanwww.instat.com/R/mmit High-Speed UWB Applications Forecast 0 12 M 20042005200620072008 Source: In-Stat, 9/04 Conservative Scenario #1 Possible Scenario #2

IEEE CCNC, Jan. 5, 2005 www.instat.com/R/wcpanwww.instat.com/R/mmit WUSB, W1394, UWB & 802.11n to Live Together Will co-exist like wired Ethernet (LAN) & USB (PAN) 802.11n provides a 100-meter circle of 100Mbps that is shared Wireless USB with UWB PHY provides high density of high- bandwidth video streaming connections within each PAN “bubble” Wireless USB & Wireless 1394 development coming along (UWB PHY) WUSB & UWB-enabled products to enter market in 2005 & 2006 802.11n: Final spec about 2 yrs away (4Q2006) –About 60 proposals received, but 2 primary camps so far

IEEE CCNC, Jan. 5, 2005 www.instat.com/R/wcpanwww.instat.com/R/mmit 802.11n Overlap/Competition 802.11n vs. UWB & Wireless USB Wireless USB Although complementary, there will be some overlap, where either or both solutions may be embedded High-end TVs, PVRs & PCs
