Socratic Seminar Rules & things to remember…..

1. Refer to the text during the discussion. A seminar is not a test of memory. The goal is to understand the ideas, issues, and values reflected in the text. 2. Cite reasons and evidence for your statements. 3. Do not participate if you are not prepared. 4. Do not stay confused; ask for clarification.

5. Stick to the point currently under discussion; make notes about ideas you want to come back to. 6. Take turns speaking; you should not have to raise your hands, but if the need arises you may do so. 7. Listen carefully to all that is being said, and write down the ideas that are expressed. 8. Speak to the group not the teacher, 9. Question each other in a civil manner.

You will need to have your book with you as well as paper and pen.

Directions: Arrange the desks in one large circle. One person will be asked to “draw” a question out of the basket. Anyone can begin the discussion…you don’t have to raise your hands, but remember not to cut anyone off if he/she is still talking. Remember the “rules” we went over for Socratic seminar. If the conversation goes off on to a different topic, that is fine! Go with it. A person can go back to any part of the discussion at any time. Remember to try to address your discussion with your peers, not with me! I may interject if the conversation stalls or becomes stagnant.
