Biomes & Ecosystems

Terms that you need to know Ecosystem Community Population Climate Biotic Abiotic

What is a biome? An area with distinct ABIOTIC factors and certain types of plants and animals. There is no road sign telling us where they start and end…so how do we tell? What ABIOTIC factors effect biomes?

Abiotic Factors Precipitation –What role does precipitation play in determining what grows or lives there? Sunlight –What is the importance of the sun? –How can it affect what grows or lives in a specific part of the world? Temperature –What is important about temperatures? –What role does it play in determining what grows or lives there? Soil Type –What types of soils are there? –Why is soil important and can it determine what grows or lives there? Others? (Oceans, Icecaps, Mountains)

The World’s Biomes Project You will be working with a partner Creating a powerpoint presentation about one specific biome You will have 2 days to get it done. You must include the following criteria.

Biome Project Criteria Name & Description of Biome Places the biome is found (use a map & description) ABIOTIC FACTORS & HOW THEY DETERMINE WHAT LIVES THERE 1.Precipitation: How much falls per year, per month, seasonal, etc. (graph)... Why is that important? 2.Temperature: Yearly, Monthly, Daily, seasonal averages…Why is that important? 3.Sunlight: How long is the growing season, are there seasons (how many, how long are they, etc.) …Why is that important? 4.Soil Type: Describe the soil…Why is that imp.?

Abiotic Factors Precipitation –The Type they get: Rain, Snow, etc. –How much they get: Yearly, monthly, daily –When they get it: Seasons, etc. Sunlight –Length of day –Controls seasons & Temperatures –Important for plant life Temperature –Daily, Monthly, Yearly averages Soil Type –Rocky, Acidic, Sandy, Fertile, etc.

Criteria (continued) You will research 3 different plants and 6 different animals For each plant and animal you will create a slide that includes: –Common Name & Scientific Name –Description & picture Create a food web using plants and animals that you found in your biome. –Must use arrows correctly –Use pictures or names Write the sources with the notes you take

Final Details Create a powerpoint, no minimum number of slides required Use all the cool stuff we learned –Transitions –Animations Make it a presentation! –Need to be able to click through it, not timed. Make it look good

The Biomes Ocean Northwestern Coniferous Forest (Temperate Rain Forest) Tropical Dry Forest Alpine (Mountains) Taiga (Boreal Forest) Deciduous (Temperate) Forest Desert Tropical Savanna Tundra Chaparral (Temperate Woodland & Shrubland) Tropical Rain Forest Prairie (Temperate Grassland)

Terms that you need to know Ecosystem –One or more communities interacting with the environment Community –All the populations living in an area Population –A group of organisms all of the same species, that live within a certain area Biotic –The living parts of an ecosystem Abiotic –Nonliving things in an ecosystem
