1 Thesis Format and Submission

2 Important Dates April 29th – Submission of ‘first draft’
May 29th – Thesis Defence June 12th – Thesis Evaluation Report (Professors) June 22nd – End of Semester Electronic Submission, 2/3 weeks before deadline July 2nd – Final Thesis due

3 Thesis Formatting – Key points
Can be found in file “Master thesis format guidelines” Following the rules are margins are most important for printing. Don’t panic if you are having problems, the print shops will help you Times New Roman 12 point or Shin Myung Jo 10.5 point 1.5 spaced You don’t need to be EXACT about the title page distances, fonts etc. As long as it looks generally like the example it is fine. Some print shops (e.g. 현대문화사) do not require you to make the vertical part. You just tell them what to write there. So also don’t worry about making that

4 First Four Pages: Cover title page Professors’ signatures page
Declaration of compliance (signed and dated) Table of contents

5 Referencing Chicago Style
The exact way to do it is in the ‘GSIS Reference style’ document BUT the best way is to reference through either word’s automatic system, or a referencing software like Mendeley, EndNote, Zotero or even Word’s own referencing system They will automatically make the referencing style and bibliography style the way you want it

6 Table of Contents Use the example given by the GSIS office as a guide
Generally, as long as the table of contents includes page numbers it will be fine Best to use the Word/HWP/Apple version of Word system for creating the table of contents. It will automatically update and sets the format for you

7 Deadline 1 – Submission of First Draft
Fee depends on if you are master’s or PhD and if you had classes this semester. Pay to the bank account listed in ‘application for thesis submission’ form Get the receipt to prove you paid and hand it in alongside the forms Fill out the forms on PC (a lot of the information is repeated!). Under the file ‘application for thesis submission’ ALSO submit ‘professional field after graduation’ form as well

8 Deadline 1 – Submission of First Draft
FIRST go to your advisor before going to the office with all the forms. He/she will need to sign some of those documents You need to submit one copy to your advisor, and two to the office Don’t worry about the formatting too much at this stage No need to properly bind it or anything, a simple bind will cost 10,000 won or just staple it if you have a massive stapler!

9 Thesis Defence – May 29th Simple 5/10 minute presentation
Keep the slides below 10, preferably 5/6 Usually the committee members will give you some elements to change. Remember to ask at the end of the defense the final date your advisor would like to see the final version. The date the professors and committee members submit their final decision (pass/fail) is 12th June, but each professor will set their own deadline. Make sure you the finished one to your advisor and committee members

10 Preparing to Submit Final Version
BEFORE THE END OF THE SEMESTER try to arrange a date for the professors to sign the second page When you submit the final version to the office, they need the original signed sheets Therefore, print the 2nd page and 3rd page (signatures and declaration of compliance) and get them signed. Then take those with you when you print the thesis, and they will put the originals in 1, and copies in the other 9 printed thesis Also, before you go to the print shop scan the two signed sheets and save as an image file. You will need them later!

11 Printing Costs 100,000 won for 10 copies. This is the minimum price no matter how many copies you print. When you go to print, take the signed 2nd and 3rd sheets. Tell them you are printing thesis and they will know exactly what to do. They will print one off on A4 and check the margins and formatting is correct. Usually takes 5 days to print

12 Submitting to the Library (Electronically)
Go to ‘User Service’ and then ‘Submit Thesis’ The version submitted electronically should have the professors signatures. EITHER insert the signed sheet scans (mentioned in slide 9) as an image file into the thesis as a whole, or save the signed sheets as a PDF and submit them separately (when you submit a thesis, you can submit up to 5 files) Takes 24 hours to get confirmation, and must be done before you can submit it to the office and the library as a hard copy Once confirmation is done, go back to the site ‘submit thesis’ and click ‘view submissions.’ There you need to print ‘license’ and ‘submit,’ sign them and take them with you to the library.

13 Submitting to the Library (hard copy)
Before submitting to the GSIS office, you need to submit 4 hard copies (or 6 for PhD) to the MAIN library Usually on the second floor. You will receive a receipt from them, which you must keep and give to the GSIS Office Give them the 4 copies and the files ‘license’ and ‘submit’ mentioned in the last slide DO NOT give them the thesis with the original signatures, it will be really hard to get it back

14 Submitting to the GSIS Office
Give them the copy with the original signatures inside and the receipt from the library Also hand in the form ‘Final Thesis Submission and Gown Rental.’ It will cost 10,000 to rent a gown for graduation It is possible to pre-prepare all the forms and ask a friend to submit the thesis for you. Make sure to sign all the required documents
