2 IBE INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION SERVICES November 2001 2 The International Bureau of Education was founded in Geneva in 1925. In 1929, under new statutes, it became the first intergovernmental organization in the field of education. From the beginning, one of the IBE’s main activities was the collection and diffusion of information centred around its Library.

3 IBE INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION SERVICES November 2001 3 After the creation of UNESCO, the two organizations worked together, notably in organizing the IBE’s International Conferences on Education. Finally, the IBE was integrated into UNESCO on 1 January 1971, after a two-year interim period.

4 IBE INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION SERVICES November 2001 4 1969 The book collection and corresponding card catalogue were closed. 1970 A new collection and card catalogue were created in conformity with UNESCO Library practices. Work on computerizing the Library, now known as the Documentation Centre, began.

First ed., 1973 ; fifth ed., 1990 (under revision) Available as the database IBETHES IBEDOCS database. Documents from the International Conferences on Education from 1972 onwards. Catalogue of the Documentation Centre as from 1980. Both databases are available on the CD-ROM of UNESCO databases IBECENT database. Used to produce a series of directories with institutional information. Now extinct except for a small portion used internally. First results of computerization First results of computerization

6 IBE INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION SERVICES November 2001 6 1993 – Creation of the INNODATA databank describing innovative projects in education. 1996 – Opening of the IBE’s Web site – http://www.ibe.unesco.org. 1996 – Creation of a full text databank of the national reports presented to the 1994 ICE, the first edition of World data on education, on CD-ROM and on the Web site. 1997 – Uploading of INNODATA on the Web site. Further developments

7 IBE INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION SERVICES November 2001 7 1998 – Second edition of World data on education containing profiles of education systems on CD-ROM and the Web. Now in its 4 th ed., the databank contains the profiles of 158 Member States. 2000 – Creation of the Country dossiers on the Web bringing together various information resources on education in Member States. 2001 – First library science students received as interns. 2001 – Opening of the IBE’s Intranet. The Documentation Centre receives researchers and specialists in education by appointment and participates in inter-library loans within Switzerland.
