2. IBE INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION SERVICES November 2001 2 The International Bureau of Education was founded in Geneva in 1925. In 1929, under new statutes, it became the first intergovernmental organization in the field of education. From the beginning, one of the IBE’s main activities was the collection and diffusion of information centred around its Library.

3. IBE INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION SERVICES November 2001 3 After the creation of UNESCO, the two organizations worked together, notably in organizing the IBE’s International Conferences on Education. Finally, the IBE was integrated into UNESCO on 1 January 1971, after a two-year interim period.

Work on computerizing the Library, now known as the Documentation Centre, began.
