The Piano

One late night, Edward, a Grandfather, settled down to play his piano; the tune lifting his spirits. He was a nice man, 79, and had been lonely for most of his life; as it was savaged by war and sorrow.

Suddenly out of nowhere, came a white figure, it appeared right next to him on the stool and for reasons he could not explain, he felt a strong warmth. Then he realised: it was his wife! She came close to him and kissed him on the cheek. But He felt nothing as he remembered she was dead. “Please don’t go.” He said, with a trace of desperation. “But I must.” She replied knowingly. “You have to stay!” He said his eyes welling up with tears. “You know that isn’t possible.” And with that she vanished.

He was suddenly thrust into a spiral of memories. He remembered his old days in the Army. He saw his old mate Jimmy taking cover by a wall, his rifle steady as a rock in his hand. He ran up to him and took cover behind him. He nodded and Jimmy went out of cover, crouched and aimed is rifle. Then suddenly he sprawled on the floor. The world turned to slow motion as he raced to his aid. He tried to help, but the blood loss was too much. He held his hand as his friend died in front of his eyes.

Then he was back at the Piano, feeling worse by the minute. And he was suddenly lost in memories again. But this time he was a little boy by the age of twelve, on his birthday standing in front of his mother as she delivered his present. He ripped the lid off and peered inside; it was a Hobby horse! He took it out and smiled a “Thank you” And rode off.

He was suddenly back at the Piano stool, still playing his sad tune. His grandson came in riding on the Hobby horse; put it on the floor and sat on the stool; Smiled, and pressed a high key, and there, the song ended.
