Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 1Autumn Quarter Sectioned Assembly Lecture 18

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 2Autumn Quarter Topics For Today Tuesday – Using CAD to do a sectioned assembly Wednesday – Lab #6 –Read the write-up and the referenced pages from The Way Things Work –Gears, Sprockets and Chains Quiz on Dimensioning next week.

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 3Autumn Quarter Steps for completing the assignment Download the file with the outline of the sectioned assembly The CADKEY file is on class on peter (H: drive) –The AutoCAD file is available under Discussion on WebCT With the person next to you, develop a sketch for your sectioned assembly. Sketch on the problem sheet. Compare with the pair across your table. Get your assembly approved by the teaching staff. Start on your CAD drawing of the Assembly

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 4Autumn Quarter Some guidelines Measure the parts on the top of the page with your ½ size scale. Look for lines and curves that can be offset to form the correct shapes Use the proper colors (CADKEY) for the various lines Set up the proper layers (AutoCAD) with line style, line thickness, and color.

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 5Autumn Quarter Runouts Be conscious of the runouts – the points where a straight line meets a curved surface

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 6Autumn Quarter Sectioned Assembly (cont.) On the outline of the sectioned assembly, change the lines to the proper line type. Use the proper line types for the drawing. Add the title block before printing. Fill out the title block with the appropriate information.

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 7Autumn Quarter Sectioned Assembly (cont.) Start with the curved lines on Part #5. Offset or copy these to the inside of the part Extend the ends of these lines to the curved cylinder on the right end. Put in the polyline that forms the edge of the broken-out section of the right end. Construct the broken-out section with Part #3, bushing, in place. Cross hatch the two parts revealed by the broken-out section. Use the cross hatching symbols shown in the part details.

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 8Autumn Quarter Cross Hatching with CADKEY The menus to use are as follows: CADKEY – Applications – Detail – Sections (fourth row down – middle icon) This brings up a dialog box. Click on quick hatch. Use alternate directions of cross-hatching for adjoining parts. This can be set in the dialog box. CADKEY is finicky about having the corners closed on the shape being crosshatched. You may have to use trim-extend to close corners or you may have to break lines at corners.

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 9Autumn Quarter Crosshatching with AutoCAD Click on the X-Hatch icon on the draw menu (left side) The dialog box has Quick and Advanced tabs. Click on the Quick tab. You can set the X-Hatch style and the angle (normal is 0 = 45 degrees, 90 =135 degrees) Click on Pick Points, the dialog box disappears, then click inside the area to be X-Hatched, the outline will change to dotted, right click, click on Enter, the dialog box re-appears, click on OK.

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 10Autumn Quarter Sectioned Assembly (cont.) Move to the left end of the assembly Locate the lines that outline Part #2, bushing. These can be located by copying the vertical line on the left side of Part #5 and by extending the horizontal lines Cross hatch the portion of Parts #3 and #5 that are revealed. Add two horizontal lines to complete the top of Part #4, the axle or shaft.

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 11Autumn Quarter Sectioned Assembly (cont.) One of the ways to complete the assembly is to do a full section of the base. Another is to do a broken-out section. For both, the inside cavity has its left side parallel to the outer side of the base. Don’t forget to put in the hole for the fastener on the left side (or both sides with the full section) of the base.

Engineering H191 - Drafting / CAD Gateway Engineering Education Coalition Lect 18P. 12Autumn Quarter Sectioned Assembly This is worth two drawings: –Dwg 35 & 36.
