STARS PART 2 By: Damian Draayers And Pasha Sekhon

You Will Learn… Color and temperature Size Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram Motion Arc second Famous Stars Spectroscopes

Color and Temperature Lots of different temperatures Red stars are coldest, 3000°C Yellow stars are moderate, 6000°C (Sun) Blue stars are the hottest, 20 000°C to 35 000°C

Sizes Many different sizes The largest is a supergiant Red giants are the next smallest White dwarves are very small but Hot Red dwarves are small but cool.

Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram This diagram shows the differences between the different types of stars.

Motion Motion can be measured in arc seconds. In a year, a star moves 0.1 arc seconds. In 1 year a star has moved 0.000028° 1 arc second is 1/60 th of 1°

Motion (cont.) In 1000 years, a star has moved 100 arc seconds. Over a period of 500 000 years

Famous Stars Arcturus is a red giant and it is the brightest star on the northern side of earth. Antares is a group of super giants with a variety of different colors.

Spectroscope Created in 1814 Made by Dr. Fraunhofer a German optician. It splits light by refraction. An optician studies the human eye and helps you see better.

Questions 1.What is the average temperature of a blue star? 2.Who invented the spectroscope? 3.How many scientists invented the Hertszprung- russell diagram? 4.How does a spectroscope work? 5.Name the two dwarf stars and which is hotter than which?

Answers 1. 20 000 to 35 000 C. 2. Dr. Fraunhofer Invented the spectroscope. 3. 2 Scientists invented the diagram. 4. It uses light and refracts it. 5. There is a red dwarf star and a white dwarf star and a white dwarf is hotter than a red dwarf.
