Terminal Velocity Jason Day

What is Terminal Velocity According to dictionary.com it is: the velocity of a falling object/body through a medium(in this case air) and the force of resistance is equal to the force of gravity. If an object has more drag it has less terminal velocity. If an object weighs more it has more terminal velocity. In other words when the force of drag is equal to the force of gravity.

Drag and Air Resistance Drag is the force against an object when moving. It slows down an object when moving. This term is often used when mentioning planes or cars. Air resistance is the amount of force that slows down an object when moving, much like drag. Air resistance can also be related to aerodynamics.

Visual Aid Force Of Gravity When Gravity pulls on an object they fall at the same speed. This is the Law of Falling Bodies

Equation This is the equation for finding terminal velocity on an object in water. Vt: Terminal Velocity m: Mass of object g: Acceleration from gravity p: the density of the fluid A: Project area Cd: drag coefficient or the amount of drag on an object.

Another Visual Aid When the skydiver is falling without the parachute open he falls when he reaches terminal velocity it is higher than when his parachute is open. But when the parachute is opened it increase drag causing the skydiver to slowdown, and have less terminal velocity.

Recap Terminal velocity is when the force of drag in equal to the force of gravity on a falling object. More weight = more terminal velocity Drag is what slows an object down when it is falling. More drag = less terminal velocity Air resistance is how much the air slows down an object when falling. Less air resistance = more terminal velocity.
