3.2 Vector Operations Physics A

Targets I can identify appropriate coordinate systems for solving problems with vectors. I can apply the Pythagorean Theorem and tangent functions to calculate the magnitude and direction of a resultant vector. I can resolve vectors into components using the sine and cosine function. I can add vectors that are not perpendicular.

Pythagorean Theorem

The Tangent Function

Example 1 Targets: I can identify appropriate coordinate systems for solving problems with vectors. I can apply the Pythagorean Theorem and tangent functions to calculate the magnitude and direction of a resultant vector. Example 1: Sonata hikes up to the peak of a pyramid in Egypt. The pyramid is 700 m wide, and 500 m tall. How far is she from where she started her hike, and at what angle did she travel?

Sine and Cosine

Example 2 Targets: Target: I can resolve vectors into components using the sine and cosine functions. Example 2: Matt is in an airplane traveling from Lexington to Hershey, PN to meet his client before the trial. The plan is traveling 330 m/s northeast. Determine the plane’s north and east velocity components.
