1 5.8 Graphing Absolute Value Functions
I can graph an absolute value function and translate the graph of an absolute value function.

2 Absolute Value Function
V-shaped graph that opens up or down Up when positive, down when negative Parent function: y = |x|

3 Translation Shift of a graph horizontally, vertically, or both. Same size and shape, different position

4 Vertical Translation Start with the graph of y = |x| y = |x| + b translates the graph up y = |x| - b translates the graph down What is the graph of y = |x| + 2?

5 Horizontal Translation
Start with the graph of y = |x| y = |x + h| translates the graph to the right y = |x – h| translates the graph to the left

6 Piecewise Function Absolute value function is an example of a piecewise function. Different rules for different parts of the domain.

7 Step Function A step function is another example of a piecewise function. Pairs every number in an interval with a single value. Horizontal segments missing an endpoint, indicated by an open circle.

8 Assignment Odds P.349 #7-35
