By Scott Hankes EDT 652 (FD12) 21 ST CENTURY SKILLS

 According to Jukes, McCain, & Crockett (2010, p. 64), they believe the essential skills fall into six main categories entitled 21 st -century fluencies…  Solution Fluency  Information Fluency  Collaboration Fluency  Creativity Fluency  Media Fluency  The Digital Citizen 21 ST CENTURY SKILLS

21 st Century Fluency Project states that this is about whole- brain thinking- creativity and problem solving applied in real time. There are six essential steps that they call the Six D’s:  Define the problem  Discover the history  Dream a future with the problem solved  Design your solution in stages  Deliver the goods (solution)  Debrief and foster ownership- be involved in the evaluation SOLUTION FLUENCY

…incorporated regularly with science inquiry  Student’s made observations about several weather maps  Student’s defined the problem: How does the Earth’s surface effect the atmospheric temperature?  Student’s designed and conducted an experiment  Student’s worked collaboratively to complete a lab report to display their results and analysis SOLUTION FLUENCY EXAMPLE

Jukes, McCain, & Crockett (2010, p. 65) state that information fluency is…  The ability to access digital information sources to retrieve desired results  The ability to effectively asses the information that is retrieved from searches or the content of messages being received. INFORMATION FLUENCY

While studying astronomy, students need to develop a colony on a planet besides Earth. Research was required by the students to learn about the condition of a specific planet and find technologies that would allow human’s to survive on the colony. I provided several online resources for students to gather information to complete their research. I modeled how to navigate the various resources and explain why these were reliable sources. INFORMATION FLUENCY EXAMPLE

Collaboration fluency is a skill that has students work cooperatively with virtual and real partners in an online environment to create original digital products (21 st Century Fluency Project). COLLABORATION FLUENCY

An initiative the science department has undertaken for the current year is the implementation of science notebooks. A key component of the science notebook is completing a concept map of the vocabulary terms and key ideas at the end of a unit. Mindmeister is an online mapping tool that can be accessed and edited by multiple people. My intentions of this tool are to create a map with all of the terms and concepts for the students to access and edit collaboratively to create one classroom concept map. This map will be a great tool for students to use to prepare for the assessment. COLLABORATION FLUENCY EXAMPLE

…is the process by which artistic proficiency adds meaning through design, art, and storytelling (Jukes, McCain, & Crockett, 2010, p. 66) CREATIVITY FLUENCY

Last year during our chemistry unit, students created a poster presenting information about an element from the periodic table. I was recently introduced to Glogster and plan on improving this project by having students complete an interactive poster instead. This Web 2.0 tool certainly sparks creativity with it’s numerous bells and whistles. CREATIVITY FLUENCY EXAMPLE

…the ability to look analytically at any communication media to interpret the real message, how the chosen media is being used to shape thinking, and evaluate the efficacy of the message. …the ability to create and publish original digital products, matching the media to the intended message by determining the most appropriate and effective media for the message. -21 st Century Fluency Project MEDIA FLUENCY

Students recently completed a presentation using PhotoStory. Instead of a traditional written report, I wanted students to use this tool to develop a more complex project. Students completed research about various types of severe weather and included photographs to enhance their presentation. MEDIA FLUENCY EXAMPLE

All the 21 st -century fluencies are learned within the context of the digital citizen, using the guiding principles of  Leadership  Ethics  Accountability  Fiscal responsibility  environmental awareness  Global citizenship  Personal responsibly - Jukes, McCain, & Crockett (2010, p. 67) DIGITAL CITIZEN

This is my first year of blogging about classroom activities. Typical posts include the BIG IDEA, daily agenda, and any homework. My goal for the near future is to begin posting discussion questions for students to reply to. In order for this to be successful, students will have to have an understanding of appropriate online behavior. I know that this is a key object for their computer class, but I will have to emphasis it once again so students know my expectations. DIGITAL CITIZEN EXAMPLE
