2 Relationships between students and teachers is a key Smaller class sizes allow for more opportunity for those relationships Teachers teaching one content allows for teachers to become experts in their content = greater opportunity for student success Current class size in core classes at BMS 27-31 Elective classes at PVMS average 27-31 students STUDENT TEACHER RELATIONSHIP AND IMPACT ON STUDENT SUCCESS

3 Research and what it says about smaller class sizes ▪Small class size along with strategic implementation leads to student success ▪The more years spent in smaller classes, the longer lasting the benefits (Tennessee’s Project Star) ▪At-Risk students show significant gains when placed in smaller classes WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

4 Number of positions lost since 2010 is 20 (Drop from 54 to 34) ▪09-10 = 54; 516 students; 93/83 ▪10-11 = 53; 486 students; 90/72 ▪11-12 = 45; 492 students; 87/47 ▪12-13 = 38; 445 students; 59/45 ▪13-14 = 36; 430 students; 61/57 ▪14-15 = 34; 430 students REDUCTION IN STAFFING SINCE 2010 BMS

6 BMS ▪ 2 additional core teachers per grade level ($318,000.00) ▪1 ID/SPED position due to increased numbers in the rising 6 th grade class ($53,000.00) ▪1 additional Elective position (STEAM) ($53,000.00) PVMS ▪ 1 additional Elective position (STEAM) ($53,000.00) ▪ 1 additional Spanish Teacher ($53,000.00) Projected at PVMS (based on elementary numbers) REQUEST FOR STAFFING

7 State testing demands more rigor. This can be met through continuing the implementation of STEAM. One possible option we are exploring is a class in CODING….. Rationale: Over the next 10 years it is estimated that there will be 1.4 million jobs in computer sciences and only 400,000 graduates qualified to do them. FULL STEAM AHEAD

8 Math Specialist at BMS (state grant funding) How are they used? Instructional benefits of expanding to reading at BMS and both at PVMS READING AND MATH SPECIALIST

9 Currently we have $41.00 available per student for the entire school year. $60,000.00 additional requested (increases the per student funding to $98.00) Uses for the additional funds ▪Curricular and assessment resources and support ▪Calculators, headphones (for math) ▪Support materials for all subjects ▪Magazine subscriptions for Science and Social studies (reading across the content ▪Novels and e-books/e-readers ▪Tables for the classrooms and folding chairs for the gym ▪Technology needs: promethean pens, keypads, etc. REQUEST FOR ALLOCATION INCREASE
