WARM-UP QUESTION What are the characteristics of a successful middle school student?

OBJECTIVES To understand how the CRCT relates to the curriculum. To understand the importance of the parent’s role in making Annual Yearly Progress (AYP). To gain information on the resources available to help my child prepare for the CRCT.

What is the CRCT? The CRCT measures how well a student acquires the skills and knowledge taught in the Georgia curriculum.

WHEN IS THE CRCT GIVEN? Wednesday, April 14 th : Reading Thursday, April 15 th : English/Language Arts Friday, April 16 th : Mathematics Monday, April 19 th : Science Tuesday, April 20 th : Social Studies Make-ups (Wed. – Fri., April 21 st – 23 rd ) Each subject has two test sections that last about 60 minutes each.

What scores do students receive on the CRCT? Student scores are reported according to three performance levels based on the GPS and/or QCC. 1.Level 1, Does Not Meet Expectations 2.Level 2, Meet Expectations 3.Level 3, Exceeds Expectations

How can Lindley make AYP for 2010? Participation95% Academic Performance Reading/English Language Arts73.3% Mathematics66.7% up from 59% *Science (TBD) Second Indicator Attendance15% These percentages are related to ALL subgroups.

How did Lindley 6 th Grade Academy do last year? 89% on targetReading 92% on targetEnglish/Lang. Arts 73% on targetMathematics Lindley 6 th Grade Academy Made AYP!!!

What is GPS? The Georgia Performance Standard (GPS) go into much greater depth than the content standards used in the previous curriculum. The performance standard incorporates the content standard, which simply tells the teacher what a student is expected to know (i.e., what concepts he or she is expected to master), and expands upon it by providing three additional items: suggested tasks, sample student work, and teacher commentary on that work.

An example of GPS: Mathematics GPS, 6 th grade ALGEBRA STRAND M6A1 Students will understand the concept of ratio and use it to represent quantitative relationships. Example of Associated Skill If a 60 ft. tree casts a 15 ft. shadow, how tall is a sign post that casts a 3-foot shadow?

What is QCC? Georgia’s Quality Core Curriculum (QCC) is a set of standards, guidelines, and expectations for Georgia educators. The QCC is under constant revision (as a result of the Quality Basic Education Act) and includes teacher involvement in the standards-building process.

WHAT IS THE 6 TH GRADE PROMOTION CRITERIA? Must pass 4 out of 6 classes for academic promotion. The average course grade will be calculated for passing (70% or higher). Additionally, consideration for passing ¾ terms is discussed for promotion. The 7 th /8 th Grade School does not engage in social promotion (passing a student due to age, height, etc…)!!!

OTHER POINTS ABOUT THE CRCT Students with limited English proficiency who are enrolling in a U.S. school for the first time may receive a one-year deferment from assessments in content areas other than mathematics and science. The IEP determines if regular state testing is appropriate for students with disabilities, even with accommodations. Some students may participate in the Georgia Alternative Assessment (GAA).

CRITICAL ACTIONS FOR STUDENTS Be present each day of school. Be an active part of the learning process. Self-assess and ask for assistance when learning is hard or not at the same pace as grade-level peers.

CRITICAL ACTIONS FOR PARENTS Ensure students come prepared and ready to learn. Check homework everyday! Encourage your child to employ good study and test-taking skills. Talk to them and explain the importance of the CRCT. Make learning a critical value! Make sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time and eat a good breakfast. Be sure your child is at school ON TIME DAILY

CRITICAL ACTIONS FOR TEACHERS Teach grade/course STANDARDS. Increase rigor in instructional planning and delivery. Differentiate instruction based on student needs, learning styles, and interest. Monitor student progress frequently using assessment items aligned with the verb in the standard using common assessments. Develop plans for remediation for students who are not meeting standards at scheduled check points during the year/course.

CRITICAL ACTIONS FOR ADMINISTRATORS Hold expectations high for students and staff and communicate such expectations. Work with teachers to ensure a timely and rigorous delivery of instruction. Collect data and monitor strategies included in the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Understand AYP rules. Ensure SIP has a plan of action to address subgroups most at-risk at your school.
