2 A lot of people are allergic to foods About 1 in 13 children have food allergies (that’s 2 in every classroom!) If all the kids with a food allergy lived in one state, it would be the 19 th largest state (by population) in the United States! Almost everyone knows someone with a food allergy

3 What foods cause allergic reactions? Milk Egg Wheat Soy Peanut Tree Nut Fish Shell Fish  People can be allergic to almost any food, but most food allergy reactions are caused by 8 foods.

4 Can doctors cure food allergies?  There is no cure for food allergies  The only way to keep from having an allergic reaction is to stay away from the food you are allergic to

5 What would happen if my friend eats a food they are allergic to?  Your friend could get very sick right away after eating a tiny bit of a food he or she is allergic to  He or she would need his or her medicine very quickly and to go to the hospital

6 One or more may occur within minutes to a few hours after ingestion Symptoms

7 Anaphylaxis  A very serious allergic reaction that happens very quickly and can cause death  Causes include foods, insect stings, latex, & medications  Individuals with food allergy plus asthma are at greatest risk for a life-threatening reaction  Administering the epinephrine (adrenaline) is key to surviving anaphylaxis.  Prescribed as Epi-Pen or Twinject auto-injectors What is it?How to treat it.

8 How can I help a friend who has food allergies?

9 What does it mean to be a PAL?  Food allergies are serious. Don’t make jokes about them  Don’t share food with friends who have food allergies  Wash your hands after eating  Ask what your friend is allergic to and help them avoid it  Get help immediately if a friend with food allergies becomes ill!

10 What would you do?  Your friend, Jake, has a food allergy.  As you and Jake walk out of the cafeteria, he says his stomach hurts.  You ask him to play with you at recess, but he says he wants to lie down  He says it feels like there is something stuck in his throat.

11 A PAL would…  Get an adult right away!  Tell the adult you think Jake might be having an allergic reaction.

12 What would you do?  You and Jake are at a birthday party.  Emily offers Jake a piece of cake.  Jake says “no thank you, I have food allergies.”  Emily says, “Come on and have some, it’s probably OK.”

13 A PAL would…  Tell Emily that even one bite of the wrong food could make Jake sick.  Ask Jake if there is something else he can eat.

14 What would you do?  Two kids in your class are allergic to milk and peanuts.  Before school, you ate peanut butter toast and drank a glass of milk.

15 A PAL would…  Wash your hands and face before leaving for school.
