1 Ch. 4, Sec. 2 Govt., Religion, Culture Main Idea The ideals of American democracy and freedom of religion took root during the colonial period. Objectives  Know why the Navigation Acts angered the colonists.  Know who had the right to vote in colonial legislatures.

2 English Colonial Rule  Mid 1600’s, English monarchy saw James II take throne away from Charles II.  James II was forced out after trying to take back powers of Parliament and tighten royal control over colonies.  1688—Parliament took action.  Placed his daughter ______ and her husband, William of Orange, on the throne.  Showed power of elected representatives over the monarch— came to be known as the ________________.  1689—William and Mary signed English ____________.  Guaranteed certain basic rights.  Inspired writing of the American _______________.

3 English Colonial Rule—cont.  England saw North America as economic resource.  Colonies provided England with _____ materials.  English manufacturers produced finished goods, turned and sold them back to the colonists.  Economic decisions based on mercantilism.  Mercantilism—nations power is determined by its ________.  Needed to export more goods than they imported.  To make sure colonies only did business w/England, Parliament passed series of laws called the _________________.  Kept flow of goods going between England and colonies.  Colonies couldn’t use foreign ships—even if cheaper.  Also, prevented colonists from sending certain products, like sugar or tobacco, outside __________ empire.  Colonists who ignored laws began smuggling goods.

4 Colonial Government  English brought ideas w/them about govt.  Heart of English govt. involve two principles: 1.__________ govt. 2.______________ govt.  King John forced to sign the ___________ in 1215.  Established principle of limited govt. (power of king was limited).  By 1760’s, 3 types of colonies emerged: 1.Charter colonies 2.Proprietary colonies 3.________ colonies

5 Types of Colonies Charter Colonies  Connecticut and Rhode Island.  Established by settlers who were given a charter, or grant of rights and privileges.  Colonists elect their own ________ and _________. Proprietary Colonies  Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.  Ruled by individuals/groups whom ________ had granted land.  Proprietors free to rule as they wished.  Chose their own governor and members of upper house.  ________ elected lower house of legislature.

6 Colonies and Rights Royal Colonies  GA, MA, NH, NJ, NY, NC, SC, and VA.  Britain directly ruled colonies.  _____ appointed governor and council (upper house).  Colonists elected assembly (lower house).  Members of legislature acted as Britain told them, but conflicts arose mainly because of tax laws and trade restrictions. Voting Rights  Voting rights granted to _____ men who owned property.  Women, indentured servants, men w/o land, and African Americans could not vote.

7 Family Roles and Education Family Roles  Colonial farm was home and workplace.  Women cooked, made butter and _____, preserved food, spun yarn, made clothes, tended chickens and cows.  Men led the household.  Men learned a particular trade by serving as __________ Education  Colonists valued education.  Often taught to read and write at ______.  NE had high level of literacy—ability to read and write.  1647—MA Puritans passed first public education law.  Community w/50 or more households, had to have a _______ supported by taxes.

8 The Enlightenment  Middle of 1700’s, colonists influenced by the Enlightenment.  Main idea: Knowledge, reason, and science could help improve society.  Science became very popular.  One of America’s best known early scientists was... __________________.
