How can we create an accurate, original way of measuring both wind speed and direction? Driving Question:

PBL Consultants  Michael Reed -Purdue Employee -Operations and Maintenance in the Electronic department  Lee Dennie -High school earth science & Social Studies teacher

Our anemometer : Materials: 4 Styrofoam cups Thumbtacks 2 wooden rulers Pvc pipe (1 inch) 1 inch pvc pipe cap Screw String Superglue drill

How we built it: 1. Align the rulers perpendicularly, forming a plus sign shape. Using a fair amount, superglue the rulers together in the center. 2. Color one of the Styrofoam cups a contrasting color to the others (red or orange for example)

Construction con’t 3. Using flat, metal thumbtacks, attach the styrofoam cups to the end of the rulers. The opening of a cup should be facing the bottom of the next cup. 4. Using a drill, drill a hole into the PVC pipe cap. Place the center hole of the rulers onto the screw, and twist the screw into the PVC cap. 5. Add the string to the PVC pipe.

Data Collection:  Location- willowbrook west (Meaghan’s apartment)  Frequency- Everyday (10/5/09-11/2/09)  Variables observed- wind speed, wind direction  Data collected- date, time, wind speed, mph, wind direction  ***Comparing our data to the National Weather service (wind speed, wind direction)
