Involvement in SW Jemez Mountains Landscape Restoration Project (SWJMLRP), under CFLRP March 12, 2015 PUEBLO OF JEMEZ

Forest Landscape Restoration Act (PL 111- 11, Sec. 4003(c)), the natural resources monitoring program objectives are: (1) contribute toward the restoration of the structure and composition of pre-fire- suppression old growth stands, (2) reduce the risk of uncharacteristic wildfire, and/or maintain or re-establish natural fire regimes, (3) improve fish and wildlife habitat, including endangered, threatened and sensitive species, (4) maintain or improve water quality and watershed function, and (5) prevent, remediate, or control invasions of exotic species. Objectives:

Projects: *Restoration Projects Summaries completed through 2014 and proposed for 2015: Collaboratively supported the *proposed Paliza Prescribed (Rx) Burn, Fall 2015 *Pueblo of Jemez (POJ) has completed approximately 180 acres combined mastication and hand thinning activities with mastication efforts by (WTI) reduced fuel loading along the holding for Rx Burn. Mastication 2 chains interior and exterior along Rd 137 and Rd 266. Reduce the ladder fuels by hand thinning with cut and pile on site. *Rd 266 Treatment adjacent and borders 2011 Las Conchas Fire and 2012 Bear Springs Fire (black) Rd 137 treatment no borders and western flank of burn *Reduced fuels loading on approx. 25 Tribal Cultural Properties (TCP) sites with in the interior area of the burn on POJ lands. *Hand thinning and piling with proper prescription of carrying fuels of site and pile off site. Cultural Use stand protection project SWJMLRP

 More specifically, we support management actions to   Reduce the risk of uncharacteristic wildfire, with the paliza prescribed burn, reduced fuels accumulations   Restore natural fire regimes, reduce from high severity to low severity   Increase forest diversity and old growth characteristics,   Improve wildlife habitat increase forage   Improve water quality and watershed functions,   explore climate change impacts,   Utilize woody by-products. Small diameter to support Walatowa Timber Industry  Tribal Forest Protection act approved at the Regional office of further project in the future  This will be accomplished through the judicious use of forest restoration practices such as forest thinning, vegetation planting, erosion control, and application of fire, including natural ignitions.  The SWJMRLP recognizes the sovereignty of the Pueblo of Jemez but as a collaborator we address the objectives. SWJMRLP

WALATOWA TIMBER INDUSTRY AND TRADITIONAL USE SPECIES PROJECT

Outcomes: In projects expected to complete small scale projects that utilized local industry and employment. Expected to treat acres and employ tribal members.
