Changes in 2009 Reducing key criteria from five to three: Teaching and Learning Research and Scholarship Service and Engagement Rationale: Scholarship was separate, but evidence was around research impact Leadership usually demonstrated in higher levels of performance than separate issue Should be simpler for applicants and panel

Changes in 2009 Equality between research and scholarship and teaching and learning Associate Professor previously required outstanding teaching but not necessarily outstanding research Possible to be promoted to personal chair based on international teaching and learning leadership as per research track Note service and engagement is still seen as impliedly somewhat less equal than research and teaching and learning Reader category now gone Rationale: wish it to be plain that research and teaching are both essential to the University’s mission

Changes for 2010 New promotions form introduced in 2009 (based on UQ form) with more explicit guidance on structure for application Revised in 2010 following feedback

Changes for 2010 Walk through new form

Changes in 2009 HOS to specify whether PMP is satisfactory and whether any issues should be brought to attention of the committee Rationale: Job of HOS is to advise committee appropriately, not to barrack on behalf of staff member

Helpful Advice Read the policy and procedures At http://www.jcu.edu.au/policy/hr/classification/index.ht m

Helpful Advice Role of HOS: Assumption is PMP is working well. You should already know roughly where you stand Your HOS (perhaps with assistance from senior peer) should be able to advise you on your chances You are very unlikely to be promoted without the support of your HOS Talk to your HOS right now and listen carefully to what they say.

Helpful Advice Clearly state your case Reflection from panel last year: people who were promoted had a clear and justified view of their own performance and contribution, supported by evidence. Grantsmanship: make a clear, easily graspable case with enough compelling evidence that it’s difficult to dismiss. Do not leave it until the last minute!

Helpful Advice Get a critical friend to read your application They will give you a read on whether you have complied with previous tip Often previous successful applicants will share their application Often previous successful applicants or committee members will be glad to provide advice

Other Points Ensure publications are registered with HERDC collection Apparently JCU has missed out on >$600k of funding through publications not being registered with HERDC

Contact Points Any queries should be directed to Mr Reg Jackson (Reg.Jackson@jcu.edu.au ).Reg.Jackson@jcu.edu.au

Talk to your head of school now! Read the policy and procedures Clearly state your case – make it easy for the Committee to say yes Get a critical friend to read your application before submission Takeaway points
